Day Trip to Antiphonitis Armenian Monastery, Tatlisu Model Village/Craft Museum and Kantara Castle
The Cyprus scenery and wildlife are at their best this time of year, so our journey through pine forests should provide pleasure for all. We start by travelling through Esentepe village and the Kyrenia mountain slopes to Antiphonitis, where those who wish to, can visit the Armenian monastery. Those who have been there before, or do not wish to enter, can experience the surrounding countryside or just stretch their legs. This will be a relaxing, laid-back day with lots of North Cyprus views to admire, so don’t forget your camera. After leaving the area, we will take a tour of several villages on the Mesaoria plain, before winding our way back to Tatlisu for a drinks break. This journey is picturesque and we go through some villages you may not have come across before, it will give a hint of life in Cyprus before the modern age.
Next we will visit the comparatively new model village and museum, constructed in and around the ruins of an old Greek church near Tatlisu. Remains of the original decorative artwork can be seen on the walls and ceiling of the church, which has been restored sympathetically as a museum. Outside, the model village has replicas of many ancient buildings and mosques from all over Cyprus, many of which you will know – some you may not. Those interested in archeology may find the land around the church interesting as I believe there are traces of an early settlement.
We will stop for lunch at Tatlisu beach complex (not included). All main meals are preceded by five mezes and salad, which are complimentary, so a starter isn’t necessary. After lunch we take the slow drive up to Kantara castle where we should have plenty of time to experience its medieval marvel, as well as the breath-taking scenery. If you have been there before, you may prefer a wander around Kantara village, while others are enjoying the ramparts.
Please take your TRNC driving licence with you, if you have one, for reduced entry to the castle. The model village and Antiphonitis are a flat 5tl for everyone.
The basic price of the trip is 42tl per person. Entry fee for those who wish to enter the castle is 7tl with proof of residency and 9tl without. Tatlisu Belediyesi restaurant’s food and prices are very good as those who have eaten there before will testify.
The coach will make pick ups in the following places, Karsiyaka square 9.00am, Golden Lady (opposite) car park, Alsancak 9.15am and Lemar, Catalkoy 9.40am. Please inform us where you wish to embark.
