Does anyone know of anything other than the flypast happening in Girne this evening, will the changing of the flags still be happening? Spent plenty of time in TRNC these last few years but never managed to be here on peace and freedom day before.

Smithscorner, starting at 7pm a military band was due to perform at the Atatürk Monument, close to the the Dome Hotel. If you hurry there, you might just catch the end of it

Hi again Smithscorner,

Re : "Will the changing of the flags still be happening?"

The first landings happened in the early hours of July 20th, 1974. Therefore the ceremonies involving flags etc are conducted in the morning of the 20th.

At Çıkarma Plajı (which most know as Escape Beach because of the club there) the most solemn ceremony started today at 8.50 am
- there was a 21-gun salute
- then a minute's silence
- then flags were brought ashore, handed to Turkish soldiers, who then hoisted them up while those present sang the National Anthem (of Turkey and the TRNC was sung)
- then a "Peace and Freedom" torch was handed to athletes of Girne Amerıcan University (seen below) whose reponsibility it was to brıng the Olympic-style torch to the Lefkoşa ceremony ... by car I presume ... not clear from the report though
- the ceremony concluded with flowers being placed on the graves in the cemetary there.

Thank you for all your replies and info (with pictures) as a newbie I did not realise how long it took from posting to appearing on the board, I will obviously take that into account in future, I had also only just discovered this board, I knew 44 had stopped but was not aware of any alternative. Fortunately we were at the harbour front in time to see the magnifecent solo display (our ear drums are still recovering) and we enjoyed the military band music whilst embibing a refreshment or 2 on the first floor of the cafe opposite. Next year we will try and make the ceremony at escape beach, still so much to learn about this lovely country
