Just done some number crunching.

For example:

Shy Teds perform twice weekly for the 6 month season total 48 bookings.

Shy Teds usual fee 350 YTL for 3 piece.

Agent commission 45 ytl.

Net to band 305 YTL.

Each member receives 101.66 Ytl per gig.

Ni per gig 47 YTL

Tax per gig 10 YTL

Accounts fee per gig 17 YTL

Petrol AVerage per gig 20 YTL

Total 94 YTL deduction per gig.

More tax deduction than the Beatles, didn't know we were that good.

So are you saying that the band has a lot of fund and nets 7.66tl each man per gig? Or have my maths gone awry.

that is oossibly wwhy bands are not signing up and are hooping forr some other answer. For soloists it seems O.K, - or Dawn is rejoicing in it, but one can see that the fees anyt band would have to charge might be outside affordability to the venues. but it was said to be a 'step in the right direction'; but others are looking for the right shoes.

I thought that the agents fee was paid by the venue booking the act at 15% of the entertainers fee plus 10% and the Shy Teds would pay 10% tax on the 350tl less each members social sigorta per month @ 180tl per month for each band member, less accountants fees and of course their expenses like petrol etc which is not tax deductable. Of course for entertainers that may only perform part of the year, this makes it less attractive but what is the alternative? A 6500.00 tl fine with a piece of your equipment siezed seems unattractive or not being able to perform ever again in North Cyprus when music is in your blood!! Regards, Mrs Snakes.

Hi musicman, the way youve explained the situation is this,
The Shyteds have gone to the bar and agreed a fee to perform for the bar for 350tl which means each member of band is risking a 6500tl fine and also the bar owner is risking a possible fine and also the possible loss of music license.
Therefore each band member takes 116.6tl.

If you were placed at a venue by A.llS.tarsA.gencyP.romotions ( A.S.A.P) and you had told the agency you would do the gig for 116.6tl per member then you would recieve this 116.6tl but you would be Legal and therefore run No Risk of Prosecution.

NI payable by any working person is an average of 360tl per month. If you had a work permit as an entertainer with A.S.A.P then your NI would only be a maximum of 180tl which we are trying to reduce with the Govt even more.

The Accountants fee would be correct as youve taken this over the 48 bookings but this is a one off fee for the year and is substantially reduced for the next year on average it should be 200tl,but it does include a promotional fee for Professional DVD and Photo Portfolio and Agency Web page to be made for the agency to promote you.

Therefore 116.6tl per member, minus accountants fee of 16.6tl =100tl
Petrol average 20tl divided by 3 members = 6.66tl which is payable for anyone travelling to work anywhere.

We hope this has helped with your number crunching and if you have any further inquiries or would like further correct details please contact A.S.A.P ON 0533 8807476 or on "allstarsagencypromotions1@gmail.com"

Thanks to all for your comments. Marions, you do have your maths right. The amount of kit we have needs 3 vehicles to transport to the venue so it is an average 20 YTL per member. If we loaded the commission and the tax to the venue we are now looking at 423 YTL for a 350 YTL gig. That is probably too much for many of the smaller venues and if we increase our fee then I can't see us getting many bookings. Visitors to the Island are down 40% for the year which is apparent in the bars and restaurants. Mrs Snakes, I take your point on the legal aspect but as you well know the amount of preperation that goes into performing plus the logistics of loading the gear, driving to the gig, setting up, taking down, driving home and unloading is usually no less than 6 hours. So even if the venues agreed thee 423 YTL fee to cover the extras, the group members would only net 24 YTL per gig. I think you would have to agree Mrs Snakes, as much as Barry loves performing, he couldn't do it for that. If the tourist industry is not bad enough the lack of entertainment is just compounding the issue. I don't have a beef about the tax or commission as this is proportionate to the income, the NI is disproportionate as it has no bearing on income an therein lies the problem. I appreciate that ASAP has made inroads into the NI structure by negotiating a reduction but this only favours 5 % of entertainers. For the rest it is not viable. Just for the record, has anyone received their official entertainers work permit yet?

Music Man, I fully understand where you are coming from, you have made some very valid points. I am not sure what exactly makes up the reduced social sigorta payments of 180tl per month, I am guessing that part of it goes to a social fund and part of it contributes towards reduced medical bills and medicines should you require it at the state hospital. There is little or no information that I can find, I still refer to Cyprus44!!! The amount is disproportionate for the entertainer who performs once a month as in the case of Barry at the moment. There seems no alternative, this is the system here, no provision for the part time worker!
Last month, I tried to find out if there was a personal tax allowance here. I looked at a website for a financial management company in Girne. Under the heading Tax, it stated a personal allowance of £2500 (note, this was not in turkish lira). It gave tax bands of £1-1000 @ 10%, 1001-2500 @ 20% and so on. I contact them on the 9th of July to ask about the personal allowance and why £'s were quoted and not Turkish Lira. They emailed back and said they would put this to their accountant. I have not had a reply. If there was a personal allowance here, I thought that this would of some help on the earnings!!! I appreciate that sharing the fee amongst band members makes it not viable and as you have rightly said, tourism is down 40% which makes it all a very difficult time for everbody involved. Regards, Mrs Snakes.

Thanks Mrs snakes. I made the point about the entertainers work permit purely because there there may be some reason that they will not issue you one. What happens then. Not being sceptical but every question posed by the Cyprus Star and the Cyprus Today to the government has gone unanswered. Before I/we would dream of signing up to anything then I would request supporting documentation from the employment department to ratify the entertainers position. At the moment there are only assurances offered by the agency. I don't want to sound pessimistic but just cautious,I'm sure we have all had experiences where we have been assured by solicitors only to find out there is no legal standing in this country. If this means sitting on our hands for a while then so be it.Good luck to Barry.

I stillfeel this is jus one step in the rigt directn, an really so far, i of littlehelp to t majorityof entertainers, especially where morethan jut a soloist is involved. If the soloist has a personal pianist then it already starts to gets impossible.

As to tax, it seems difficlt to get answers for that also. Maybe they are on holiday too!!!! Itis a minefield, isn't it, and one mus congratlate ASAP for starting t walk throgh it, but I qite understand hat others will not, PLUS no one is really talking out the changing of one's v isa to work perit, and where does that leave one'spartner???
The ITalian sushine calls and it has muckd upn my computer already!!!!! It seems the whole of the Med has problems.

Any more answers would be welcome, and I do hope that The Star will be able to come up with more answers.
