Details
To honour the unprecedented interest from various Cypriot and international groups to learn about Nicosia’s history and culture, AHDR-implemented Europe Direct Nicosia will be organising a series of walking tours around the walled city throughout 2016.

These tours are a fantastic opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of Nicosia’s past and present; where answers to set questions can be sought and where new questions arise.

Starting at the Home for Cooperation, participants will be guided along cultural heritage sites or monuments, including those which have either received the EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Award, (such as the Armenian Monastery, the Omeriye Ottoman Baths, the House of Hatzigeorgagkis Kornesios) or cultural monuments which have been renovated with the financial support of the EU (such as The Lefkosa Bandabuliyra/ Covered Bazzar and the Bedesten/ St. Nicholas Church).

These tours will not only introduce participants to the rich, multicultural nature and history of the city, they will also concentrate on the rehabilitation of the historic centre as a multi-dimensional process incorporating architecture, planning, social and economic objectives.

Europe Direct Nicosia also hopes that these tours will contribute to the promotion of sustainable mobility and the well-being of all citizens.

All tours are free, open to all, and will be conducted in English, Turkish and Greek, but require registration beforehand in order to secure a space. Please email us at europedirectnicosia@home4cooperation.info to confirm.

Our first tour, 'Gender, class, ethnicity: Stories from a shared and contested city' will take place on Saturday March 19th. The tour will kick off from the Home for Cooperation at 10am sharp and will last for roughly 2 hours.

Watch this space for the times and dates of upcoming tours!
