In September our flame tree (about 6 years old) decided to give up the ghost. We left it overwinter to see if it would shoot again, nothing. We have now cut it back to about 1m but I am not very confident we will have any luck. Has anyone removed a flame tree and know what the root spread/depth is like? Or got any ideas what attacks them? Such a shame a really beautiful tree.

We had the same thing happen to our Flame tree [about 12 years old] - it was a beautiful tree and just died, we left it over the winter hoping it would shoot again but nothing. We were told that the same thing happened to a couple of other Flame trees and about September time. A mystery !! We would be very interested if anyone has an answer.

That’s interesting. Would love to replant but the front garden is full and would be worried about replanting too close to old site

We also had a flame tree which died, after making enquiries with various Garden Centres the General consenus is the cold weather kills them off, gets right down into their roots apparently.

Fair point, but ours did take a few months to die off after the winter so it could have been cold induced and just took time.

Out in North Queensland at the moment. The flame trees are fabulous but it is an area of tropical rainforests. Think possibly ours died of thirst.
