I have a 42" flatscreen Samsung - I think it is a plasma and screen just went, no picture just snow. Can hear sound, but no picture. Can this be repaired or is it time for a new one. Not that old and hardly used it, just used when out in TRNC.

Could be a faulty inverter we have just had one replaced.

If the screen lights up, and displays 'snow', and you can hear some audio, then the power sections (inverter etc.) are obviously OK.

What do you use as the source of your viewing material? - e.g. Satellite dish and receiver, normal TV aerial pointed at the nearest transmitter, laptop / internet 'box', DVD player, etc.

The answer to this might pinpoint the problem area...

Yeah it's often a source problem e.g. either the TV has been inadvertently switched to expect an input that is simply not there or the feed from the input source is not getting through - and may not be a problem with the TV at all!

Have you tried eliminating the 'problem' TV - by attaching another screen and checking that the source is sending out a signal? Is it HDMI or Scart? Scart sockets and cables are often problematical...

Hi Soner,
Before you take it anywhere.
Try this option.
Switch off the power to all the connected devices.
Unplug all connections to the TV and any other devices, then refit them,
including any satellite cables, carefully!
Could be a scart problem, if possible, change any scart cables.
Good luck.

Thanks for all your responses, much appreciated.
It is as Keithcaley states: "If the screen lights up, and displays 'snow', and you can hear some audio, then the power sections (inverter etc.) are obviously OK."
I have no Scart cable connected to TV.
I do have a HDMI Cable from Hard Drive where I store my movies etc.
TV is also connected to Satellite via Audio plugs and DVD player with surround Sound via Audio plugs. No other connections.

I have as advised removed all connections and switch on all devices then replaced connections except HMDI cable, but no joy, still have Snow flashing intermittently.

Any other advice before taking for repair or buying new?

Hi, The presence of 'snow' on the screen when you do not normally use 'terrestrial' channels (i.e. via an aerial pointed at a local TV transmitter) suggests to me that you may have inadvertently switched the TV to an incorrect 'input'.

I would suggest that you look at the remote control, and find a button marked 'Source' or 'input' or 'AV' and then press it.

This should give you the option of selecting various 'inputs' -, like AV1, AV2, SCART, etc.

As it sounds as though your satellite box is connected by 'phono - type' leads, it is probably connected to AV1 or AV2 - I suggest that you try each of those to see which one works.

Hi Keithcaley,
I have done that. I use several inputs one for Sat, DVD Player and films stored on Hard drive. I have tried removing and replacing leads and checked all sources via remote control. Had a Turkish repair man look at it and he just scratched his head.

So, if you use the remote control to try to change from one input to another, does the on-screen menu appear as normal? - is it superimposed on a 'snowy background'? - and if you do change to another input, say DVD, and set the DVD player going, all you see on the screen is still snow? - but with normal sound?

Incidentally, does the sound come out of the TV speakers, or do you have an external speaker system?

How about some pictures of the screen before, during and after performing the above operation?

Will it tell you anything if you click say the 'menu' button and adjust the brightness etc, if you can see the menu, possibly the screen is working?

I know this doesn't help if none of the inputs are working, but might suggest it's an input error as opposed to the screen.

Should be cheaper and maybe viable to fix the input cards and not have to replace the screen. All the internals should be available on line.

How about if you connect a laptop to the input and operate as a ghost screen to the laptop?
The wife keeps complaining I never listen to a word she says ............. or something like that.

Have connected only satelite to tv (which works by the way) and just get sound with snow. Sound from TV not sound system.
When Menu selected, still no difference.
