You can get a perfectly adequate, and easy to use android box, all software installed, complete with detailed instructions (which actually makes it a good choice for renters, as well as owners) from Paul Aldred (AKA Satellite Cyprus).
I bought one of these boxes from him, just to try it out, and it compares favourably with a Minix box, which cost me twice as much.
The Minix box, on paper looks far more 'competent', but, as they say, 'The Proof of the pudding is in the Eating'
I have various other Android boxes and laptops around the house, for watching TV, so I have compared it with others.
He pre-installs a set of software Apps that enable you to watch not only standard UK (and other) programmes 'live', but also to catch-up BBC & ITV programmes via their 'Official Players' (you will need a separate VPN for BBC iPlayer, if you're not with Multimax) - and ALSO to view practically any film or TV show ever broadcast (via the other Apps).
I think that it's excellent value for money, particularly for those who don't really want to start dabbling with software! - although he does set you up with a Google Play account, so that you can take it a bit further if you want to.
I know that there are much more advanced pieces of kit available, but you do need the technical knowledge to tackle 'em, and this doesn't require any.
Paul offers technical assistance over the 'phone where needed, and you won't get that from eBay...
His numbers are 0533 869 4371/2 .
I have no connection with Paul and his Company apart from having bought stuff from him

Well, I think that that just about says it all - if you're a Geek, or want to be 'blinded by science'!Navek wrote:Hi wireless,

You could always go for a raspberry Pi running Debian Linux...

Hi wireless,
Not sure if they are available, anywhere on the Island.
A friend ordered my MAG254 in the UK, and brought it to Cyprus for me.
You tube should have "how to" videos, on how to load the MAG254.
Not rocket science, for most

Re: IP TV box - best to buy - where?
certainly not rocket science and linux is better for me - happy to program it and set it up - I'll get one in the UK and setup there then bring over here.
by the way I am a recent convert to Extend broadband and the service and line is good
thanks for your help
by the way I'd not use a raspberry as I need a remote as well - having said that the pi is a great little unit just not for this task.
thanks for the suggestions though

Re: IP TV box - best to buy - where?
The MAG254 is better and faster than any linux/android tv box, running XBMC/Kodi player. Any given day. Plus, it offers a lot more features with NTV and other providers, who support MAG250/254/245/275 . Features supported are catch up, radios, movies, youtube browser, internet browser, etc. The firmware/OS of the MAG cannot be modified in such way as the linux/android boxes' (customization, extra app installing, etc), but it is stable as an ox and will not let you down. MAG is more of a plug and play device and it will work straight away, while the android/linux boxes, when having a software issue will need decent technical knowledge to troubleshoot or reinstall.
