Problem with TV through computer

I have a small notebook computer that is connected to the TV by HDMI cable I also have a bigger laptop computer. The notebook works well on the TV but it will not play anything recorded or ITV iplayer even although the VPN is on. Both these will play on the laptop? Can anybody explain why this happens as I would have thought if it did not play through the notebook it would not play ont he laptop?

which one are you recording on? when you record it stores it on the hard drive so it can only see the one thats got the programme on thats plugged in

I am using filmon and recorded it on the notebook but can only play back on the laptop? It shows it has recorded on the notebook connected to the TV but does not load. But works fine on the laptop in the next room.
