Sound on phone disappeared over night

Yesterday no problem with sound on Redmi, but this morning its totally dead. I've been on to everything in settings that might have a bearing on sound but no help. However, if I connect ear plugs to phone, it works perfectly. Any ideas please? Thanks. PS Have Googled problem but no suggestion help.

You didn't mention whether you had tried powering the phone off & then restarting it
