You have to wonder if he's done his homework as this is about 150yds from Lokmans which to my mind and a lot of other peoples minds does the best fish and chips west of Girne.

I did have the same thought, and then it occurred to me that in the UK, you tend to get clusters of similar shops in particular areas - Jewellers, Tailors, TV/ Computer shops to name just a few.

Some of them are even owned by the same parent company, so perhaps there is some commercial sense in it after all...

Kiethcaley, yes you have a valid point, But in the UK there are a lot more potential punters and a lot more spendable income, I think it is a ridiculous idea, Lockmans are first rate and so is Saltys, but all it is going to do is dilute the already almost non existent customer base.

There really should be some sort of restriction, like we used to have in the UK. I know that in the UK there are certain places where you get this scenario, IE, Tottenham Court rd. in the 60s was the place to go for Hi FI equipment, also Golden Mile in Leicester is renown for Gold, The Balti mile in Birmingham and of course many other places have specialist retail areas.

This is TRNC and I feel that there is just not the amount of clientele. yes a new broom and all that stuff, but long term ???

Lee, you made me laugh...
The number of times that I've said "There really ought to be..."
I know that you would tend to focus on the food trade, but the same applies to Supermarkets, Yapı markets, and any other business that appears to be doing well!
Somebody looks at it and thinks "Oh, they're making money, we'll open one!" - and there appears to be no form of restriction at all, if you want to risk your money, you just go ahead.
Barmy!

That would be 'proper' mushy peas, soaked overnight with one of those big white tablets then? - Whatever they were

You also have to throw Freddies into the equation

Oh 'eck, it's getting complicated now!

Apart from the quality of the fish & chips, how do we equate enormous, juicy pork chops to Haddock. (Fumbles for slide rule...)

I have eaten in Salty's, Lokman's and Freddie's, and Salty's is by far the best, then Freddie's and Lokman's last. Of course everyone's taste is different!!!!

Bicarbonate of soda tablets. The powdered version does the same job.

I remember my old college days, and in our Business Studies class, our lecturer came out with an interesting concept.

If you don't know what business you want, look in the yellow pages through the full page ads. These were by far the most expensive so suggested a business should be doing ok.

Open an identical business within 100yds. Offer a few little extras, tea and coffee (for free of course) while waiting, most importantly make it very clean, and be polite. As he said, statistically, you should take 50% of the business from the place down the road.

Now, in this case of course, the new Saltys will be on the main road, so will likely catch a lot of the trade that comes from Lapta way before it even gets to Lokman! And that's assuming the person knows where Lokman is on the back road.

Be interesting to see how it goes.

Personally, having never once had a questionable fish and chips from Lokman, I would stick with them. That said, the kids have enjoyed Saltys when they have been in town.
