Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı announced that the new AI-powered cameras will initially check speed, seat belt, phone, and insurance, with other applications expected to launch by the end of the year. Story KENDIR
Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arıklı participated in the program "Morning in Cyprus" broadcast on KIBRIS TV and prepared and presented by Eda Alisinanoğlu, and made important statements regarding the artificial intelligence-supported cameras that have caused public reactions.
Minister Arıklı stated, "Highways are public, not private. Even the interiors of cars are not private. If cars were private, darkening the windows wouldn't be prohibited. There's no such thing as a private life inside a car."
There is no penalty for drinking water or eating a sandwich!
Minister Arıklı announced that there would be no fines for drinking water or eating sandwiches in the car, saying, "They may catch those who smoke, but they will not report those who drink water or eat . "
Arıklı added that opposition MPs wanted the smoking ban and noted that when Parliament reopens, regulations regarding both food and beverage bans and smoking bans will be made.
“The state didn’t get a single penny out of its pocket.”
Erhan Arıklı, noting that the cameras were donated by the Republic of Turkey, said, "The state didn't spend a single penny. We paid a lot of money for the old cameras... Even though the software alone cost 5 million euros, they made them for us for nothing. May God bless them."
Arıklı also drew attention to criticisms about the cameras' location, saying, "They were installed where the old cameras were. The market is against everything! The Constitutional Court has ruled that these cameras can be used... If you obey speed limits and don't break traffic laws, why should the cameras record you? Is that what you're trying to say, 'I won't obey speed limits or traffic laws, so the state shouldn't record me'?"
“The number of cameras will increase to 300 by the end of the year.”
Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı stated that the number of AI-supported cameras is currently 150 and that they plan to increase the number of cameras to 300 by the end of the year .
Arıklı stated, " Next year, we will purchase 300 more cameras and completely control the country's traffic with 600. We have no other way to control traffic that has cost the lives of 80 of our people in a year and a half. The state cannot put a police officer next to every driver. Get used to this; you have to. These cameras will become part of our lives, control traffic, and crush traffic monsters."
Penalty application in 4 subjects in the first stage
Minister Arıklı also announced that the cameras will be operational on Saturday, August 16th, saying, “Initially , speed, seat belt, phone, and insurance will be checked. Fines will be issued for these four items by the end of the year. For anything else, only warnings will be issued until the end of the year, and there will be no fines. Other measures will begin after the end of the year.”
Arıklı also gave the message that legal regulations could be made and some issues could be softened during this period.
Arıklı stated that warning signs are currently being prepared and that the speed limit on some roads could be increased from 100 to 120, adding that the Traffic Commission would decide on this.
