Registering Dogs
I have 4 dogs here in the TRNC. One is from here and is micro chipped and registered. The other 3 were bought through Metehan border where I paid 350tl to the Veterinary Department in Nicosia who took their passports for about 3 weeks and I had to go and collect them. All the dogs are licensed through the Belediyesi and all have microchips passports etc.Does anyone know if this is sufficient for the 3 that came through the border. The paper said that they need ID numbers but the Dept in Nicosia must have their details logged. Its all very confusing and its hard to get a definitive answer from anyone.Does anyone have any clue? Thanks

Re: Registering Dogs
Fincho. I bought my dog with me from the Uk. Microchipped & with a pet passport. She was registered with veterinary dept in Nicosia. Then she was registered in the veterinary government dept in Girne, then with our local Belediyesi
A few months ago when this new law was first announced I went to the government veterinary dept in Girne. Filled in yet another form with her chip no & details, back a few days later to collect her card.
In a couple of months she will be due for reregistration with the local Belediyesi, I believe this is a yearly thing.
Our dog has more documents than the two of us put together.
Each visit is 20lr here 20lr there. Ok if you have one dog, a more expensive business if you have more than one

Re: Registering Dogs
Hi Bonnie I may be wrong but I thought the dog registration at Girne Belediye only runs from 1 January to 31 December? Does anyone know as I have only recently done ours & was going to go again next January no doubt they will take my money whatever.

Re: Registering Dogs
Fincho: One of my dogs was microchipped here over l0 years ago, I was afraid that he would have to be chipped again, but the Vet ran the reader over him which gave the number and the Vet filled in a form confirming he was chipped. Vet was Selim Ozhuy from Petkingdom (opposite China Bazaar at Karakum) and very helpful with completing the paperwork So Fincho I suspect you will still need to register the dogs here as I doubt they will accept the registration in the South but at least you shouldnt have the cost of microchipping them again.
My dogs were also registered January to January. Knowing the microchipping was coming and hearing a "D day" of June I took a risk and left registering until May (to save having to register twice in one year) and no one commented on the discrepancy.
We live in Ozankoy so have to register in Girne. Previous years they have always had a new disc for their collars but this year they said to use the old discs but the number dont tie up!!!! I gather issuing of discs depends on where you are - some villages dont issue them at all.
I agree the rules are extremely confusing, and vary according to where you live. I also very strongly agree that dog caring is becoming very expensive and very unfair to people who have taken more than one dog off the street and had it neutered etc. I think there should be an organisation to support the rights and needs of people who adopt strays, but KAR dont see it as intheir brief - is anyone else interested in some mutual support (including dog sitting)?

Re: Registering Dogs
I Guess all the various Belediyesi have their own methods of registration. Esentepe was some time last summer. It took 18mths from the initial registration at the government veterinary dept in Girne before they got up & running. No disc just a piece of paper.
I'm sure they'll inform us when they are ready to collect some more lira.
All seems a bit disjointed & haphazard but not for me to criticise. I'll go along with it to keep our dog safe & legal

Re: Registering Dogs
I've just got the paperwork back from the vet after getting our dog chipped. The vet told us to go to Belediye in Esentepe to complete the registration - has anyone else done this? Just wondered if we have to wait until the annual mass registration that Bonnie referred to.

The vet told me that the Vet dept. is in the same road as the Wednesday market on left hand side just before the Police Station.

Re: Registering Dogs
Once you have the paperwork which gives the chip number and details of the dog and owner, you take this to Lapta Belediyesi to the office that is directly beneath the "bridge". They then take the details for their records and return the paperwork to you. It costs 12tl for a male (not sure about females as haven't got one!) As the Lapta registration didn't take place as usual in April this year I'm assuming this takes its place.

The Veterinary Dept in Girne is just after the hospital on the left coming into town, it is a old building but you can park in the rear.

Re: Registering Dogs
Neutered bitches also cost 12 TL for Registration. I am not sure about unneutered dogs and bitches.
The offices near the Wednesday Market are a branch of the Girne Municipality where they handle registration for Girne and Ozankoy and maybe other villages, I dont know which. It seems Lapta and I think Catalkoy do their own. the Veterinary Dept. is opposite the main hospital, just before the Chemist if you are coming from Ozankoy Direction driving towards Girne.
Bonnie: OK if you have one dog, but there are a lot of people who have rescued several and if you are already struggling financially to cope with increased inflation, including vets food and dog food, the cost of chipping and registering several (and then having to register twice during the year) can be a considerable burden and a disincentive to people to take dogs off the streets.

Re: Registering Dogs
The government veterinary dept I've referred to in my posts is the building opposite Girne hospital on the road to town.
Ragged Robin I have deep respect for all those folk who take in the stray dogs & give them a home. I wish I could do the same. Each post on here looking for homes for abandonded dogs tugs at my heart strings.
I am no longer young enough or healthy enough to care for a young dog. I live in an upstairs app without a garden. My dog is elderly doesn't need a lot of exercise, has hip displacier .We have to walk her on lead until we find a bit of wasteland for her to wander. I just do the very best I can for her.
I carry food & water in the car and feed the strays outside supermarkets, some are so beautiful with their soulful eyes. I would love to be able to take them home but I know I can't.
Your suggestion of an organisation to help those who have taken in more than one dog is an excellent idea. I would certainly support that. bonnie

Thank you for all your comments and it's sometimes nice when conversations can be had without argument and upset on the forum.I have four dogs now.Two rescued from the UK,a Greek Cypriot rescue and a Turkish Cypriot rescue.I bet nobody can guess which one is the naughtiest of all of them!!Much to my husbands dismay and fast emptying wallet I still feed strays. If it's in you I guess its in you and like I told my husband feeding strays is cheaper than divorce these days.

Re: Registering Dogs
I found that it was a simple process when we registered our dog, but I suppose every day is different here!
We arranged an appointment with our vets for a health check and registration, it cost 25tl for the registration at the vets, they then sent us to our local belediyesi (Esentepe) we took all of the dogs paperwork here (an extra paper was given to us at the vets) as well as our passports, they registered her on the system asked for 12.50tl and said ok come back again same time next year to do it all again
As far as it running Jan - Dec that may just be certain areas as I know that we just go once she has been registered a year no matter then month

Re: Registering Dogs
Lauren, I used to do in Aug/Sept each year as that is when the dog was 1st registered. When she was chipped I went this May and asked did I have to return next May or January. The very pleasant lady in Girne said January. On the bottom of the form I got, it does say 31st Aralik (January)

Re: Registering Dogs
Ragged Robin, agree with you that the rising costs of owning dogs is becoming a disincentive and seems that more and more dogs are turning up in my area having been abandoned now. It is all very well coming up with these new ideas ie registration and chips etc; but it is targeting all the wrong people. Caring, responsible owners should not have to do either for we know how to treat our pets. It is those who do not that should be forced to care for their animals properly and these measures just DO NOT CUT THE MUSTARD. These extra costs are money spinners for the government and vets. Why isn't money being put aside to police owners? Why don't people have to apply for a licence before they get an animal and therefore be subjected to scrutiny and routine checks to see whether or not they are responsible enough to have a pet in the first place. Pro active beats reactive every time. However, here we don't even have reactive. I have seen cows lying out in FULL sun with no water and absolutely no shade at all during this summer, bloody disgraceful and upset me really badly. Further, the Belediye is rounding up strays and killing them in some areas. thought it was illegal to kill here in TRNC. this is what KAR have always maintained, so keep their animals alive for years, often with no hope of rehoming them. They frequently liaise with Government and suggested registration in the first place. Probably same with chipping. I am afraid they may have shot themselves in the foot now.
