Here is the link to the Facebook group Hope 4 Pets North Cyprus..

Also one of many posting..
..Not long back from Famagusta! What a day, don't think we'll be doing that again. This puppy was one of many rounded up by the Gazimagusa Beldiye and put into a compound up at the rubbish tip. We're both heartbroken at what we saw! The puppy in this picture was nowhere to be seen, Hatice chose another puppy and we phoned the lady and she agreed to take it instead. So good part of this story is that one lovely little girl is now with her new family. The sad part is there are at least 20 puppies up there with not much food, dirty water and absolutely no love and affection. One of them also was limping! In addition there were very young pups, eyes open able to walk but that's about it, looking for their mum who was nowhere to be seen! They also couldn't access the water and had none at all, we filled up their water dish. Sadly we left them all behind to almost a certain death without their mum. As there is no rescue centre in Gazimagusa these street animals have absolutely no hope at all.

I have not contributed to Facebook and do not particularly want to. Is there no other way I can get info from Hope 4 Pets? Do they have an e-mailing register as KAR do?

Re: Hope 4 Pets North Cyprus, Facebook
First a big thank you to all who came to see us yesterday at the Pia Bella Hotel what a good send off for the girls on their way to the outreach teams all over North Cyprus. On arrival all we excited to help unload the car that was packed with goodies for the poor dogs that are so desperately in need of our help.
Thank you ladies in the postings above too for you interest, and no you do not need to be a Facebook user to come and join us in our efforts to try and make a difference. All information about the next meeting is in the first posting, my email address and phone number, just make that contact and you will be pointed in the right direction. We are seeing many drinking and feeding places around Girne area for the street dogs now and in this terrible heat we have been having they are very much needed indeed. But alas there are many places that have still got nothing like this in place a yet, ! outside of town in the villages and in other areas in North Cyprus that are not visited often.
We have a situation that is very much in need of your help today so please make that call this morning. Here are some photos. ..

These 7 little darlings are in much need of some TLC some are so very weak that we are unsure if they will even make it through last night ! The stronger ones that were left with food and water may still have a chance, we can only hope and await further contact from the outreach teams.
Hope 4 pets have started to make a difference, ad this is our pledge ! So we are happy to know that those not a F/B user are willing to help. Thank you both Bethany and Owl Lady I look forward to meeting you both. Please contact us ASP

Re: Hope 4 Pets North Cyprus, Facebook
Sadly, we have already lost two of the 6 pups we came back with yesterday, they were so weak and thin and covered in fleas and ticks! We brought back 3 white and 3 black 3 week old pups that had been dumped up there to die. They had no access to food nor water as the water was in a trough and food on a raised platform, both too high for them to reach! In any case, at 3 weeks they weren't weaned and should have been on milk, who was going to feed them up there!?
We are not confident that the third white pup will survive, but two of the three black ones are doing well with the third doing ok. What kind of people dump 3 week old pups in a place like that without their mother and don't make sure they are fed? Two of the 5 white puppies were already dead when we got there yesterday and now two more have died, so sad. This will not happen again cos we took through a car full of food and we have volunteers who will go daily to make sure the remaining pups are all fed and watered.
In the compound there are another 15-20 pups between approximately 8 weeks to 6 months with only one adult dog that is so thin and depressed! So it appears orphaned or abandoned pups are being dumped up there with no parent or human to care for them properly. I'm not saying they aren't being fed, but their food try was so dirty and all the food stuck to the bottom we emptied it out, cleaned it and filled it with fresh dry food. The water trough was full, but was green, so again we emptied it out, cleaned it and refilled it with fresh water.
Next time we are going to take a few toys as there's are about 6 pups about 4-6 months who are very friendly and playful.
Anyway, if anyone would like to get involved that would be fantastic. I'm more than happy to set up an email group so people who don't have access to Facebook can be kept up to date, just send me your details via pm.
We are at the VERY early stages of this journey, but we know we will succeed if we pool resources.

Re: Hope 4 Pets North Cyprus, Facebook
Update, when our volunteers went up today to feed the dogs, there were two new ones. A beautiful collie with a collar who is on heat and a lovely little terrier cross, you can see them both in the picture below. They older ones were waiting at the gate for them and wanted to play.
We asked for a head count so there are 13 puppies and 6 larger dogs including the older pups. However, when they were leaving they saw another 30-40 dogs being dumped in the compound and some were a bit aggressive. Could be fear making them aggressive.
So the problem is even bigger than we'd thought, however, good news, the Famagusta Team made a few calls and a vet is coming up tomorrow to check in the dogs. In addition, apparently this compound should be closed and they're building a new one. If this is true, great, but I won't hold my breath.
Remember if you want to help please let us know.

The way these poor animals are dumped is appalling and the people concerned need shooting. However any increase in dog dumping can no doubt be in a great part blamed on the new rules regarding registration and microchipping recently introduced by the government. People on low incomes find themselves unable to pay for these costly procedures - hence the poor dogs get dumped. Surely the government should have given this some thought before issuing the directive - or maybe not as usual!!! Just a new scheme to make money

Re: Hope 4 Pets North Cyprus, Facebook
I totally understand where you are coming from, but as I see it, the government has at last taken a step to try and make owners take responsibility for their pets? In my humble opinion, anyone who dumps their dog because of the microchipping shouldn't have had the dog in the first place. Microchipping isn't that expensive as far as I know and if they can't afford that, what would they do if their dog became sick, let it suffer?muffin wrote:The way these poor animals are dumped is appalling and the people concerned need shooting. Being a dog owner comes with responsibility and the government have taken a step towards ensuring this. Sadly it means many dogs will be rounded up and goodness knows what will happen to them. The government is damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Please be aware, Irene has now lost all 6 puppies rescued 10 days ago after a valiant attempt. She is bedridden at the moment with a nasty virus, origin unknown. She is also completely exhausted. Re: Hope 4 Pets North Cyprus, Facebook
Sorry Mozgor but your comment is very unkind. Are you not aware that there are several people who took on several stray dogs at a time when keeping dogs (food, Vets, worming, parasite treatment etc. etc.) was far less expensive than it is now and have cared for them responsibly for many years, but with decreasing value of their income/savings and increased cost of living they are now struggling and suffering themselves in order to pay Vets bills when what are now beloved pets are ill. For you the cost of microchipping (the registration of course is not new) may not be much , but to a pensioner who hasnt even had a holiday in years because they cant afford animal care it is a lot and with several dogs it tragically for them as well as the dogs, could just be the last straw.Mozgor wrote:I totally understand where you are coming from, but as I see it, the government has at last taken a step to try and make owners take responsibility for their pets? I usually deplore the criticism of authorities that takes place on this forum, but in this instance I think the Government has made a serious mistake , particularly since it seems the means to check chipping against a register was not in place before the law was passed, and that the reason was not so much to solve the stray problem but - according to a Government spokesman as quoted in the Press at the time, - as to comply with "European Union practice" which, in itself , I find somewhat disturbing.

Hi
No need to apologise and yes, you are right, my comment may seem a bit harsh, particularly taking into account the circumstances you have stated. There are a lot of people who have taken in strays when they really can't afford it and for these people the introduction of compulsory microchippimg must be hard. Especially in multiple pet households! I wasn't having a go at people like this, I was merely trying to express my opinion about the fact that when the government does nothing they get criticised and now they have taken action they are still being criticised. They can't win.
The fact that the microchipping was enforced before the infrastructure was there, does not really surprise me and I'm sure nor you. However, I still think the government had to start somewhere to tackle the stray problem we have here, maybe this isn't the place to start, but at least dog owners will be held accountable for their dogs. It's all the strays and dumped dogs I feel heart sorry for. Dumping a dog is not the answer and I will never understand how anyone can do that under any circumstances.

It's all the strays and dumped dogs I feel heart sorry for. Dumping a dog is not the answer and I will never understand how anyone can do that under any circumstances.

Re: Hope 4 Pets North Cyprus, Facebook
Mozgor: Do you not remember some time ago reports here and in the Press of an elderly couple who had to return to UK for serious health reasons: they left their house in the care of comparative strangers in return for looking after their dogs - and their belonging and the dogs disappeared. There was a lot of shock horror at the time, but no one queried why they had to go to such measures to have their pets cared for during their entirely necessary absence! If everyone thinking of adopting an animal was deterred by getting older themselves or the effects of future illness of themselves or partner, or need for them to care for a relative back home, no strays would ever find homes. There is a lot of pressure to adopt pets but no help, only criticism for those who can no longer cope through their fault of their own. Often heartbreak over the fate of their beloved companions may aggravate their own illness - to suggest they are irresponsible is hurtful.
The Government (ill advisedly imho) brought in microchipping as a result of pressure from those who quite simply do not understand the nature of the country they are living in, and that it just does not have the resources to deal with the strays humanely. In the UK most local authorities(and I think, Police forces) in the UK have an officer with specific responsibility for animals and hopefully some training (and the cost is included in Council Tax !) as well as the assistance of charities such as the RSPCA who, unlike KAR, do not have to rely on volunteers but have professionally trained payed animal handlers. Here they are probably relying on people seconded from other duties and nowhere to put the animals when they are rounded up. Those who put pressure on the Government to "do something" without thinking through what that entailed should have thought about the saying "Be careful what you ask for, you might get it" What they have got is even more suffering for the strays and for those who, albeit in a small way who were already trying to do something.
Sorry for the ot rant, but one of my dogs was rehomed after a health necessitated return to the UK of her original rescuer. Her very obvious concern that having lost one "Missus" she must not risk it again is heartbreaking and gives rise to concern as to her future as well as the others being so dependent on me!
To return to topic, re my first para, I never heard of the missing dogs being found. It has probably been too long but is there any chance they may be among those recently rounded up?

Is this one of the missing dogs from the couple Ragged Robin has just referred to?if so, they were lost from around the Girne general area, can't remember exactly where. I suppose it could possible it could be one of their dogs in Famagusta.
Could you post the picture of the dog you are referring to, the one in Famagusta I mean. Or alternatively post on the FB page and I'll pick it up from there?

Hi Ragged Robin
When anyone takes in a stray in good faith and their circumstances change, nobody should point the finger especially as that animal would probably never have known love and kindness otherwise.
I wasn't referring to people like that, I was generalising, which I know can be dangerous. You think I would have learned that by now cos it's always the people you aren't talking about that take it personally and those who you are ignore it anyway, sorry.
Perhaps going forward, once our group gets better established, we will be able to offer help to people who are struggling to keep their pets due to a change in circumstances. In the meantime, we have a lot of basic work to do to help those animals that still have nobody to care for them.

Re: Hope 4 Pets North Cyprus, Facebook
Thanks Moyra, and you point is taken. Some time ago I joined a group that was trying to get together people who needed help with their pets and those who could offer short term help, but there was insufficient interest and it seems to have folded. I know you are busy now, but I feel there is an increased need for cooperation, for instance if people who cant have dogs could help with Vets visits and excercise, others might be able to adopt or foster more dogs because they really need homes, not kennels or pounds whatever their condition. A thought for the future and meantime good luck to the work you are doing.
Can someone please let us know if the missing dogs are found. I dont "do" facebook, but that tragedy has been haunting me every since.
