Vaccine for Leishmaniasis

I will be retiring to Kyrenia this summer and bringing my dogs with me. They will have no immunity to Leishmanisasis as they have never been exposed to it. I have bought vaccines from the UK to give them prior to their arrival. Has anyone tried this yet? I just want to know if it will protect them and whether anyone's dogs have suffered any adverse reactions. Jane M

Maybe someone who keeps more up to date will come on here - but as far as I am aware the vaccinations are not available here, so if they are yearly renewable you may need a source in UK than can supply them in later years. It also means that few if any of us have experience of the vaccinations - mostly we use "Parabond" collars - and I gather drops are also available see the previous post to yours.
KAR (Kyrenia Animals Welfare North Cyprus) Website has more info about sand flies - you might also contact them to see if they know more about the vaccinations. Also to check out the rules re Microchips and Registration.
I suspect reactions may depend on the individual dog - if you are living in UK would it be worth trying to vaccinations a month or two before you come while you have a Vet who knows the dog's history.
If it is any help I have been using the collars for years for 19 year old (Cyprus Terrier) 12 years old (Cocker Spaniel cross) and 4 years (Daschund cross)in the summer months without any obvious ill effects

We had Sheba vaccinated for this (amongst others) at Garfield vets in Lapta.
No side affects as such. She was a bit lethargic for a day after but she did have "the works".
She's doing very well.

Thank you for this information. My dogs will start their series of 3 injections next year to give them time to build up some immunity, I hope. Can anyone recommend a good English speaking vet? Also can you buy the herbal/non chemical Leishmaniasis dog collars in the TRNC? I have a friend in Spain and one of her dogs is allergic to the chemical collar but is OK with the non chemical one. Thank you for any information. Jane

Jane M, it would be helpful if you indicated an area in Girne you are moving to. In our 7+ years here, I haven't heard a bad report on any vet. However, there are, literally, scores of them from Lapta to Catalkoy. Ours (Petcross) is in Karakum and this is a top practice. I am certain one of the 3 vets there would advise you.

Thank you for all your help and information. My dogs start their injections in April in order to have the complete course and the build up immunity period. Hopefully this, plus the collars, will be enough to safeguard them. Jane M
