DOG REGISTRATIONl

Last year KAR did saturation media coverage with dire warnings that dog registration must be done by 31st Jan. This year I have seen nothing.

KAR s instructions were somewhat confusing, and as I was to ill to go out anyway a friend kindly registered my dogs for me. I gather he had to make a separate trip to get worming tablets, despite the dogs having been regularly wormed noted on a Vets "passport" and previously registered

Has anyone registered their dogs recently, and if so could they please give me the idiots guide to how to do it, with directions . Is the main registration still at the offices on the road leading to the Wed. maket/Police Station?

HI Rambling Rose,

We have just registered our dogs. You go to the Veterinary department opposite the hospital where they register the dogs for 10tl each and give worming tablets. As we live in Catalkoy we then go to the Belediye and pay some more money to them for registration. It is different amounts for male and female dogs. Hope that helps.

Last Feb I went to the Vetinary dept opp Girne hospital to register my dog.My details were taken .I was given a green card and worming tablets 10tl
Told to go to my local belediyesi to register. The young man took my details said he would contact me when it was up & running, maybe May.
Tried again yesterday, one year on.The young man said" they haven't been round yet" Not sure who they are.
To my amazement he still had my details along with several others who obviously had attempted to register.
I asked if it could cause any problem not having the registration. His reply was " If there is just send them to us."
Maybe one day!!

Our dogs were re-registered in Girne Veterinary Dept as in Post 3 above earlier this month. Went to Girne Beli to re-register them as in the previous 3 years to be told, no you have to use your local Muhta. Spoke to him, typical Cyprus shrug - no not me, try the local Beli. Another shrug so dogs only registered with Veterinary Dept for 2013. However, of all my local neighbours with dogs, only the expats bother.

We register our dog every year with Lapta Municipality, the green card is completed and worming tablets provided. They have told us in the past that there is no need to register at the Veterinary Dairesi as well. Lapta/Karsiyaka area is usually done in April and there are always locals there with their dogs.

For info, last year a man came round to our house to check how many dogs we had against the list of dogs that had been registered.

I was told by the Vet. dept in Girne that the registration runs Jan-Dec., so if you wait for them to visit the village in April, it means that you are not registered from Jan-April. I do wish they would get their act together with things like this! We had always previously been when they visited the village, but last year did the trip to Girne and then Lapta in January, and paid the two charges. We were still pondering what to do this year, so this thread has been interesting, but I am still none the wiser!

Nor am I Hippo! But thanks for your replies anyway. I do wish there was an organisation that looked after the interests of responsible dog owners (particularly those who adopt strays), For some of us who arent so young and have mobility problems all this trailing around is quite an ordeal.

One thing I can add to the general knowledge is that neutered bitches are cheaper. Last year I had to pay extra for a (rescued) puppy just becaus she was too young to have the op.

I am tempted not to bother , but I feel that if one did stray that fact it had the registration disc might make the Police think twice before destroying or shooting it!

What is the point of worming once a year anyway - surely they have to be done very three months.

Another example of the non-joined up approach to legislation in the TRNC!

Actually it was the European Union that started it! The first year (must have been about 97 or 8). They decided that the whole Island should have dogs protected again the worm (I can never remember the name) and donated the money but apparently did nothing to ensure that the arrangements worked. Equivalent of lighting the blue touch paper and retiring, With far fewer Vets than there are now, everyone had to take their dogs to a field on one particular day and two overworked and oviously unqualified boys had to inject them all! Imagine the chaos! One of mine, a very young, untrained and mischievous puppy, took objection and (being involved with the other dog who was terrified of all the other large dogs)I couldnt do much, so the boys just handed me a pill and said go away and sort itself yourself! So I suppose things have improved a bit! The impossible takes longer.

So while you are casting blame, think about the EU who allocate our money to "good causes" but do nothing to ensure it is spent properly.
