"When I was a boy, my Mam would send me down to the corner shop with a pound,
and I'd come back with five pounds of potatoes, two loaves of bread,
three pints of milk, a pound of cheese, a box of tea, and a half a dozen eggs.

You can't do that now.

Too many f***ing security cameras."

And a leg of lamb which would feed a family of 6 was 5/- (five shillings for you younger people). I remember my little sister always being given the knuckle bone to chew on when she was very small.

That meat fed us Sunday lunch and was made into some sort of rissoles on Monday with the leftover cabbage and potato being fried up as Bubble & Squeak. This with a tin of peas and lots of bread was Monday's evening meal.

Tuesday was always rabbit stew.

Wednesday was the leftover stew on pancakes with sweet pancakes for filling up on.

Thursday (being payday was a very poor meal) Usually eggs and chips and a tin of beans and a lot of bread and the jampot.

Friday was fish and chips (home made) with mushy peas, again lots of bread

Saturday was tv night so just little sandwiches, cheese on toast, apple pie and a bun or a swiss roll, all served on a little trolley with the teapot.

Then back to Sunday again. This routine never varied unless they could not afford a roast and made liver and onions instead.

You certainly always knew what day it was by what was on the table!

If we were lucky enough to have chicken the left overs and the carcass were put in a pot next day and a broth made for tea.
