Sterilser on hot and cold water dispenser

We have a hot and cold water dispenser with a cabinet and a sterilizer dial on the side(we thought the cabinet was a fridge at first). Does anyone know what the sterilization function is for? Thanks

Well I've got one with that function, and as far as I can make out it is intended to 'sterilise' whatever you keep in the 'cupboard', using Ultra-Violet light.

Probably the same principle that some hairdressers use for scissors and combs etc.

I think that it's a bit of a gimmick really, I've never used it, and I can't think that it would be very effective, given the amount of cups and glasses that could be stored in the 'cupboard'...
