New university to be built in Çatalköy

For the academic year 2012-13, the University of Mediterranean Karpasia, founded by a Turkish (mainlander) entrepreneur, will operate from a building in Küçük Kaymaklı, Lefkoşa (shown below). But the unıversity's rector this morning explained that in November they hope to lay the foundations for a new campus in Çatalköy - the article doesn't say where exactly in Çatalköy.

The education will be given in both English and Turkish.

Many locals are very keen on this, as they are hoping for employment. There is a lot of unemployment here. Also I'm told, it matters who you vote for, to get a job locally and this is an outside organisation, so maybe....
My friend is so keen to have a nice job but I for one am not holding my breath on this for her.

"Also I'm told, it matters who you vote for"

According to my TC friends, that's the case across KKTC, and it's why they are so many doing next to nothing in the civil service Apparently after every election comes a new wave of jobs for the younger relatives of supporters of those successful ... but of course the prevıous "waves" have to be kept on ...

ian,

you are rightly critical of the chaotic north cyprus administration

it seems cyprus can do nothing right, the greek cypriot part is near
-bankrupt and will either have to get a massive cash injection from
much ut-upon european taxpayers or leave the euro

...but I'd agree two wrongs don't make a right

Universities appear to be about the only tangible growth industry. Have met and had as neighbours students from several areas of Turkey, from Sudan,Cameroon and Jordan. They all have appeared to have a reasonable disposable income. A mix of Bachelors, Masters and one Phd.

Probably an economic asset, only here for a limited time .The students I've known have always gone home when courses finished.

mel,

I think the "problem" here is that that species of human we call turk is
involved in these projects rather than another species we term cypriot

and in all honesty without a "solution" to the cyprus dispute that is the
grimly inevitable route for north cyprus as the sort of protectorate it is

we may well not like this one little bit, but the good ole' days of british
domination are gradually receding into history and it is the turks who will
set the agenda for good or ill

...and in the south, russians (oops!)

Andre,

I agree with your comments. Im always suspicious of the term The Good ole'days .

Historically I suppose you could say British domination was quite brief compared to the period of Ottoman domination.

History does tend to repeat itself.

mel,

there is nothing wrong as such with the good ole' days
as long as one is clear exactly which good old days one is referring to
...and for whom

likewise many of us would applaud the gallantry of those who imagine
they are taking up cudgels on behalf of the tc's, however they are defined

but as in many things in life, that is not quite the whole story:

at the risk of being labelled a patronising xxxxxxx,
I have to report that most of the "tc's" are unhappy with turkey's role
on the island but few can come up with any better or less-worse alternative

as an analogy, british people overwhelmingly reject eu membership when
asked by pollsters, yet many experts think in the sober light of day a real
vote could actually go either way

likewise a large percentage of scots are attracted by the idea of
independence but many perhaps would be very happy simply with more autonomy within the uk

having no doubt upset many different holders of fixed opinions I rest my pen

andrew 514, TC's might not like Turkey's role in most things on this island, but they'll grab any financial assitance going with both hands. It always appears to me that the North can't have it both ways. He who pays the piper calls the tune. If the North takes Turkish money than they'll have to swallow their pride and accept what Turkey tells them to do. This country hasn't got the expertise to exist without Turkish assistance, it's a shame, but there you are.

sophie,

it is all about far more than money:

if turkey ever withdrew its forces from the island
the north would to use mrs thatcher's memorable
phrase when referring to the GLC within hours,
"cease to exist"

likewise the greek cypriots as a whole have been
offered a variety of financial compensation packages
as far back as 1967 which they resolutely rejected

any solution in terms of a reunited cyprus now looks
so unlikely for all the hot air expended, we are left
with the gradual incorporation of north cyprus into
the turkish world

and many of those who challenge and protest at this
whole process may not only have the interests of the
"tc" at heart

indeed they may not always be who they claim to be
