I have tried all kinds of conditioners, used the tumble drier but I whatever I do they still resemble cardboard! Anyone have any tips for getting them to be fluffy and soft again?

I know it sounds really weird but ironing them tends to make them softer....

Also putting them in the tumble dryer, but that's too expensive a way to get soft towels. Carry on with them hard, good for circulation!!!!!!

Wait for a really windy day and peg them out for a good blow - they will get nice and soft and fluffy.

Sorry will not help with your existing towels but if you do get them soft or buy new you can keep them soft by hangng them out at night in the summer & then putting them in the drier before they are completely dry for a few minutes.

Although this does t make sense to me, I've heard that you shouldn't use fabric softener?

When I take my towels out of the washing machine and before hanging them out to dry, I give them a good shake.
This loosens up the fibres and helps them dry softer. However, I must say I do miss my tumbe dryer as nothing beats tumble dried fluffy towels.

I stopped using Fabric Softener many moons ago, thought it did more harm than good. Like others I also give them a really good shake before hanging them out and I bring them in just before they are bone dry. I think hanging them out for too long in this heat has a detrimental effect. My daughter has the Rolls Royce of tumble dryers in the UK and I don't like her towels (despite the fact they cost a flippin fortune and are as thick as hell) and I'm sure its because she uses a "softener"

I've always been lead to believe that if you use fabric softener, your towels become less absorbant.
Judyvin, try soaking your towels in soda crystals, (you can buy them in Mr Pound), or put them on a fairly hot wash with quite a lot of crystals plus your washing powder.
I boil my flannels in them, and they always soften up.
Hope this works for you,
