With my new found time I have decided to learn how to play the guitar, my only problem is (surprisingly) ......... I need a guitar

Does anyone have a classical guitar with nylon strings they are not using that I could buy from them?

I do not want to fork out for a new one simply because I may well be absolutely useless at this and give up after a couple of months!

Please message me if you can help.

Many thanks

Sue

Scooby ! the problem is double sided ! the cheaper the instrument the harder it is to play ! They are not made with the precision and as user friendly as more expensive instruments, thus giving a false impression to the user ! Kind regards Barry

it would be better to start off with a steel string guitar (Nylon sounds cr@p!)

Also, look for a reasonable decent second hander, guitars are precision instruments.

That way you have an instrument that sounds true once tuned, and if you throw the towel in you can sell it on; they hold their value pretty well.

As to learning: Well there are books, DVDs, You Tube Videos, Magazines, Websites. But the best way to start off is to get a few starter lessons - or a mate can teach you.

Good luck

http://www.guitarjamz.com is a great site for beginners. I started learning guitar 2 years ago at the ripe old age of 43. You are never too old (it just takes longer!) I'm still pretty crap, but I do it for myself and not to perform in public. It's great fun once you get past the sore finger tip stage !

Thank you everyone for your input, really appreciate it and the links to different websites.

Barry - thank you, appreciate what you are saying.

scubaboy, it doesn't matter how good or not you are as long as you are enjoying yourself! I will never be a performer and may not even master it properly but who cares as long as I have fun trying

After fifty-plus years and accumulating (so far!) nine assorted guitars, I'm still learning!
As said, go for a good-quality instrument, even if price dictates secondhand. If at all possible take someone with you who knows stringed instruments - even if not guitar, they will have knowledge of the important points (true necks, body, intonation, action, etc).
Steel strings versus nylon? Steel sounds better for some styles, but are harder on novice fingers, while nylon (lower tension) are easier - and I would hate to suggest that people like John Williams, Julian Bream, Segovia and other classical guitar players sound "cr@p"......
As to what a guitar built for nylon strings would sound like if fitted with steel strings.... Never touch such a disaster, let alone consider buying one....
But most important, while practice will make you better, too much may destroy the "fun" element - good luck!

I do believe however, that at some point when you are self taught you hit a level that then needs proper tuition. I think i'm probably at that stage now ! I can't keep playing the same song over and over again !

Plenty free tuition on youtube. Just search for the song you want to learn.

...miscounted; a month ago I bought another (12 string) that is intended to live in TRNC for use when I go on holiday - can't keep taking and bringing back each time, but neither can I do without a guitar....

Jamie (Man in Black) runs group guitar lessons at the Food Lodge and also another location but I can't remember where. These are held weekly.

Check out Oscar Lopez's discography and see if you still think so...
