Binoculars
Can anyone recommend a good place to buy a decent pair of binoculars please? Kyrenia or Lefkosa would be good. Thanks.

Re: Binoculars
I'm pretty sure I've seen them in Akay Optic next to Deniz Plaza. Alternatively you could try that upmarket shop (can't remember its name) that you can see when you look down to your RHS having coming down the hill to the spaghetti roundabout from Lefkosa. We bought two shooting sticks from there and Binos could be something they stock.

Shame on you Keith. When you come down from Lefkosa to the roundabout "spaghetti junction" as some of the TC call it. you look down to your right to three or four shops. There is a separate slip road to them all. I'll make a point on Monday of driving to the b-----y place to find out the name - just for you!! I can't make it any clearer.

Are you talking about Şevketoğlu the boat shop?

Is that the roundabout over the top of the new by-pass or the one at the bottom of the long hill that used to have the tennis court to the left and the road to Dogankoy on the right with the road in front leading straight down into the centre of town?
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

You can see the centre of town from that one but you need a pair of Binos.

I QUIT. At least if you refer to S.J. then at least no-one has to ask - which roundabout do you mean?

Re: Binoculars
What main use do you plan to make of binoculars.... on walks? static - looking out to sea etc...?CairnO'mohr wrote:Can anyone recommend a good place to buy a decent pair of binoculars please? Kyrenia or Lefkosa would be good. Thanks.
There are many different budgets, physical weights and powers of magnification to be considered...
For general bird-watching and trips out I'd recommend 10x42 or 10x50... a good balance of performance with not too much weight...
If you want to use them for extreme distance like stargazing then a higher magnification and weight can be considered as you can mount them on a tripod (the stars don't seem to move as quickly as wildlife!)
There is a camera shop near HSBC bank called Yuksel (or similar) that has some good quality ones....

Yes, Groucho, the main use would be birdwatching trips. Thank you for the advice, I will have a look at all the suggested options. Cheers folks.

Re: Binoculars
If you join us on a Kuskor birding trip then high-quality binos can be made available by Robin Snape (trip leader) for a small fee... The next one is pencilled in for 19th September.CairnO'mohr wrote:Yes, Groucho, the main use would be birdwatching trips. Thank you for the advice, I will have a look at all the suggested options.
