Thinking about doing a shopping service. Bringing stuff over for people from the south. Not exactly sure how it would work yet. Any ideas?

By supporting the economy of a country that despite the weasel words from Anas is still intent on eliminating the TRNC.

I think öf it as supporting the people of our country by providing a service for people who needs stuff they can't find or get .. ☺ merry Christmas everyone and a happy new year.

Don't think I would haul anything illegal over. So nothing that is not allowed by customs like electronics or furniture etc.

I live central kyrenia.

What is it you can't find here ? Not having a knock just asking a question, I do also agree about supporting the South I have never needed to in 8 years.

But I thought maybe if you ask on the Forum about what you are looking for we could help. We have an excellent wide range of products here now.

Negative Nick from Cyprus 44 forum. a few years ago was a very old friend of mine from the UK, and when we first came here he came for a visit and virtually everything we gave him, to eat he liked and kept asking did you get these in the South ? He was South crazy he thought everything had to come from the South.I don't think he had not even visited the shops here.

Then when we completed our own Villa build he kept asking about the things in the house Bathroom fittings etc. etc, Did it come from the South ? Then when we explained no we don't so the South. He could not beleive the quality of some of the items and the price .

Happy New Year.

Original front shocks for my car! £543.00 from Japan plus the import tax for here, £480.00 from Turkey again plus the import tax, £366.00 from the South fitted as well! That is two things I needed! A Big Mac, TFI Fridays, Jeyes Fluid, Shredded Wheat, Dog food at less than half the price here (considering the number of dogs here that one is surprising), toothpaste and house hold cleaning products at half the price but the big thing is CHOICE! I never used to bother with the South at all and still do not like going there but the choice of different things available, some cheaper and some more expensive, makes it foolish to sit on a principle of never buying there. Close down some of the Yapi markets, stop the rise of shops open today and closed in six months over here and concentrate on a viable marketing strategy and I would never have to go South again. I love this country but its own greed is killing itself - just how many "Student Accommodation Flats" are actually needed when the majority of students only come here to spend two years working illegally and then vanishing into the distance again? Blinkers off for the New Year and take some action may be a better idea than a continuing round of Peace Talks???

Slightly off topic but I have to ask - where in the South (or if anyone knows, North) can you find Shredded Wheat??

We also love going South for a change. A walk and lunch on Ledra Street, the lovely supermarkets with so much choice, cat food you cannot get here on the North, a coffee and cake at Debenhams, all makes for a change of scenery. On top of which had hearing aids fitted on the South at a very reasonable price.

Dog food and other pet needs is a separate issue , as the cost of keeping dogs has more than quadrupled since I came here and I think advantage is being taken of people's kindnesss in adopting strays, particularly as they are subsidizing the TRNC economy anyway by taking them off the streets.

When the border opened I crossed several times, mainly out of curiosity, but I must admit to being overwhelmed by the choice, and taking advantage of the wide variety and spent far too much buyiing food items, particularly, that I had not seen for 10 years! I soon decided the saving of a few pence per item of necessities was way outset by the extra costs of tax, insurance etc, not to mention the aggro. As I paid in sterling by UK Credit Card I was at risk of fluctuations in the rate of exchange. I came to the conclusion the best thing about the South was the view of the two flags on the mountains - at least they told me I was driving in the right direction.

Since then there has been a great increase in the amount of goods liked by Brits in the North, and in most things I find the choice quite adequate - life is too short to make a fuss over the type of breakfast cereal.

The only reason in my mind for going to the South is items needed for health reasons: if I could I might go for foot and beach wear for comfort and ease of changing for stiff and arthritic limbs, that dot not expose bits that are best not at my age, without being to drab and "grannyish" but that means somewhere like Marks and Sparks and Clarks and it would be cheaper to get someone to bring fom the UK - but in either case sizing would mean taking me with them and I would probably be screaming to go home in a couple of hours!

Erm..

You can get decaf coffee from there and not get ripped off. You can get goose meat, pork for one third of the price, fresh milk, proper bread, as far as I know antibiotics free chicken, organic veg, lamb meat for half price, steaks half price. Fresh English pork sausages. Some that come to mind.

Here are some offers

When were there in October we bought some fillet steak from Lemar at Alsancak and it was 19tl and about a half a kg in weight, at the time with the exchange rate as it was worked out at about £4.22 per lb.

Are you saying that fillet steak in the south is £2.11 per pound ?

I get the most incredible steak from Fast Food butchers in Alsancak. I know many people who also highly rate his meat. Very reasonable . I find Mr Pork just simply the best Pork and other products. Also like many people here if you go to the right shops you can find virtually anything here and quite often cheaper or certainly as cheap as the UK.

Mac Donalds I would never use, not because the product is a bit like eating cardboard, but because of the millions and millions they gave to the IRA. But if you want a first rate Burger try Jonnie Rockets at Famagusta.

Like people here who knock the veg , because it does not look pretty like the tasteless stuff from M & S or Sainsburys. But our vrg here as flavour.

Speak to Mustafa at Mercar Alsancak about your Shockers maybe he could help.

Neg Nick, I think he as moved on from Thailand to Vietnam, I did business with him for 20 years in UK he was my insurance broker and a very very good one at that. I did not know he had moved here and quite by chance one evening I bumped into him walking his dogs on dirt track in Alagadi.

Great Guy , had the nerve and bottle to speak his mind. Also very intelligent man. Except he thought life revolved around the South.

Happy New Year to you all.

The last time we went just before Christmas the pork was 1.69euros a kilo and is the best pork I've tasted in a long long while also you can get Aberdeen angus beef(albeit Australian)for approx. 13euros a kilo and that's the best I've had in the 10yrs I've been here.We get all our pet food(3 dogs 4 cats)as it's a lot cheaper,we buy 1 months insurance,go the 1st day and the last day that month then miss a month so only paying for 6 months a year.My better half just found a new discount supermarket called Smart which she says has very cheap branded goods

Each to their own. I find the best pork on the Island comes from what i now the South, been eating it since 1965 and have never found anything to compare with it. If I stopped buying things from outlets purely on the principle of how they spent their money I would probably never buy anything else at all, dig deep enough into any major retailer and you will find they support something you are against, for whatever reason. MacDonalds produce the only and best sausage and egg MacMuffin and I like them so that is where I buy them from. The veg in the North has more taste than any I have found in the South apart from the sweet corn, again - apart from Canada - I find it the best I have tasted. It is not pretty veg in the North but it never used to be in the UK either, till the EU made it's laws on what veg had to "look" like, still better than any in the South. I can buy a set of "refurbished" or "OEM" shocks for my motor in the North, still more expensive than original parts in the South, I have tried but have no intention of fitting Chinese shocks to a Japanese car or having "refurbished" shocks fitted either - buy original and at least you get a matched pair! After all its only a matter of having steering and braking that you can depend on and who bothers with that here - lol.

Neg Nick was "Interesting"!

So steak is cheaper in the North than the south as previously stated ?

Just been looking at some prices online from South supermarkets and to be honest prices are not that much different.

'McDonald's does not, and never has, funded the IRA. This story is based on an old urban myth that dates back to the 1970's when McDonald's first opened up shop in the UK. The payslips used for UK staff at that time were imported from the USA, and included printed reference to the American equivalent to NI pension contributions - the 'Individual Retirement Account' - or 'IRA' for short. The rumour that McDonald's donated to the IRA terrorist group arises from this misunderstanding.'

Of course urban myths and rumors never hold and truths do they ??? A bit like old wives tales I suppose. When we lived in the states in the 80 s it was big news. But Mackie D. have enough dollars to bury things like this. No doubt some of you people still believe that Lee Harvey Oswald shot JFK with a rusty old rifle.L.O.L.

Bear in mind if you are operating a shopping service as a private individual you are still subject to the goods value limits outlined in the Green Line regulations. (http://ec.europa.eu/cyprus/turkish_cypr ... dex_en.htm)
OK if you're just bringing in small grocery items, but a large car load of stuff from Ikea could put you over the limit.

If you're running a business different rules apply, but of course you will need a work permit.

I am reading the above with interest and note that quite a few people bring meat products back into the TRNC from the South, that is their decision and theirs alone, it is entirely up to them what they bring and how much however if you are going to set up a shopping service you need to find out what is legal and what isn't. I believe, though it needs to be verified, that all meat and dairy products should not be brought over fromt the South to the North plus limitations on how much in value you can bring over plus furniture, etc etc

Im sure you set this idea and thread up with the greatest of good intentions, but its the money side rather than legalities than concern me. Would you want money in advance (just fine), but how much would potential purchasers give you. e.g. I don't have a clue what items cost down South. Or, would you pick up the bill for everything and hope that people back here would be happy with the amount you paid. i.e. if they ordered a certain type of tea, it wasn't available, then someone going themselves would have a look around and perhaps buy another brand. You would probably have crossed it off your list. Then another problem, would you come back laden with goods and people meet you at a certain car park and everyone divvies u?. I suspect the actual practicalities would be a problem. Not trying to rain on your parade, but you can see where I'm coming from?

Hi

Yes I see the points you are making.

Possibly start off with small orders and would probably deliver to your doorstep for a fee which is agreed on beforehand. Receipts of items purchased would be given ofcourse. And payment after delivery would be the easy and aceptable way to do it in my opinion. You'd posibly get a few people mucking around but hey I'm sure most people are honest and fair in general.

Thank you

Sophie - legalities will not be a problem for you as long as you ONLY pay on delivery as has been offered.

I would hate to see anyone pay out then have good confiscated at the border by the authorities

Sorry to pour cold water, but if you are charging a fee, however small, I suspect you will need a Work Permit , which will probably mean the fee has to be high. Also if you are proposing to use a private car for the purpose it will affect the tax and vitally could invalidate insurance of your vehicle. If you are planning regular trips it is not something that will go unnoticed - remember all the fuss when people undercut the taxi drivers by "giving" regular "lifts" to airports. Following that thought, what happens if valuable goods are damaged by acccident, or perishables by unavoidable delay?
