When is an MOT not an MOT? Today I think. I went to the office he just wrote the paper out and never even looked at the car.

Well done. I am due to take on this lottery next week. Did it take a lot of beautiful smiles ? The last time I went the queue system was ignored for over an hour by numerous locals and condoned by the staff there. I made the mistake of politely asking if I could have my turn in the queue. From approximately 25 metres distance, sideways on from the car, the official declared that I was to go away and remove the tow bar from my car and come back with 2 new tyres on the front end. As the existing tyres were virtually new and had not been inspected I lost the plot and went into Victor Meldrew mode. I hope that do not recognise me when I return this time.

There were three people in front of me so I just sat and waited. A man came in while he was writing my slip and his car was much newer than mine but his was looked at. Maybe he likes blondes!

I obtained my MOT on Tuesday ..
1 .. Have your car cleaned inside & out 20TL .. I also had an engine clean 35TL (haggled) for both .. Excellent job at the car wash across from the Ozankoy/Catalkoy Lemar ..
2 .. Emmission test (genuine) at Erdener garage .. Situated between China Bazaar & Erdener supermarket .. 25TL
3 .. Tax office near to the hospital for MOT form .. 118TL ..
Tax office .. From Pia Bella hotel turn right opposite Mollys' Place ..
Right down to the bottom turn left, 2nd or 3rd let .. Big building on the right ..
4 .. Police garage for MOT .. Log book, pink form & emission test certificate ..
MOT centre .. From the Colony Hotel up to the water roundabout, turn right .. Turn left by the Mercedes showroom .. Follow the police sign & drive to the front of the garage ..
Into the little office to the right hand side To get you hand written MOT.. Never even got off his a**e & gave me my MOT ..
Money wasted on the clean car, but then again he may have seen me drive in .. 11 year old car gleaming ..

I have heard the urban myth about getting your engine washed so they can see the engine number, but we have done 3 MOTs & never had the engine washed. Had to replace 2 tyres at MOT 2 (6 years old) before passing, but they were not worn out, but had crazing in the side walls caused by the heat here.

First MOT the policeman asked whether we had the car with us & just wrote out the MOT without checking anything. I really don't know why they don't at least check that the lights work. That wouldn't be too difficult.

If english mot tests were introduced here the roads would be mostly empty as I am sure 80 percent
would not pass.I always change my tyres and brakes regularly so dont have a problem with the lack of checks but some of the heaps driving around must be life threatening to their owners.

Urban myth ? I will have a clean engine when I attend for MOT. Sometimes there is a customs officer at the MOT centre presumably seeking out vehicles which have been imported but no tax paid when due and also checking that engine numbers remain as in the registration document.. I have seen the reaction of one of them when at risk of getting his fingers or uniform dirty and I do not want to be susceptible to multi visits and incurring directions to replace parts of the vehicle which are perfectly serviceable. In any event it is no bad thing to have clean electrical contact points and filters under the bonnet when the weather at the moment is dust bowl in nature.

Deniz, you should try South Africa we don't even have MOT and roadworthy only done on change of ownership which could be anything from new to 20 years+ and the commuter taxis are accidents waiting to happen and as for the taxi drivers, I could write a book !

The whole thing was a doddle earlier this week, no waiting, no clean engine but I think being blonde does help!!! I have to admit the 4x4 in front of me did have his chassis number checked (power torch was used). I was given a warning that my rear registration plate was faded (not red enough) and that I should buy another one soon.

Survived the MOT test today (perhaps by the skin of the teeth) which is as big a farce as the medical tests/residence process. The costs including the emissions test match those of UK but add absolutely nothing to road safety. A walk once around the car to take the tyre pressures, not with a gauge, but by pressing a thumb into the walls of each tyre, then asked if I had a triangle. Replied "no", I can only play a flesh flute, tunelessly, and usually with ensuing collateral damage. He must have thought I was about to misfire as he immediately invited me into the office for the certificate. Should I have been taking the pith. No, but I did not start that !

For an M O T in India. You must have Mud Flaps 2 up front and 2 at the back. And an emmision test, When you go to get the emmision test, he checks the mud flaps, you back the car in to a garage, its about the size of a normal house garage, the tester puts a lilttle PC Camera on a plastic stool and points to the car number plate, he sticks the whatsaname in the tail pipe, tells you to start the car and rev it up once then switch off.

He prints out the report and there is a picture of the number plate on the report. and thats it.

I asked the guy doing the test, "What if it fails" he said " You give me more Rupees and it will pass"

And the cost 50 Rupees. about 60 Pence.
