Please would you note the gesture and at the time please contact both parties to claim £1000 of funding.

In 3 years
The EU will have disbanded and not exist OR the EU will remain in existence.
Contact details for both parties would help!

Suggest that you both forward same to Tulips Committee

p.s. I've added it to the Kibkom Calendar, so that it won't be forgotten... see here

If you don't mind Keith will you kindly declare the "winner" when the time comes - if there is no clear winner ie yet another eu fudge/rebrand then may I suggest both parties pay the £1k. That way Tulips either receive £1000 or £2000 come what may.

I'd rather not!

I think that both parties should either nominate a 'committee' or ask Soner or Posh (or even the entire Moderating Team) to adjudicate - I get enough flak as it is

This is the basis of the bet. No ambiguity. Plain and simple.
Accept or decline.

The original statement by Hedge-fund

Waz's response
Hedge-fund wrote: Shall we say a £1000 bet that the EU will not exist in its present form exactly 3 years from today?
Hedge-fund's taking up of the challenge - note the subtle change in terms from "the EU won't last the next 3 years" to "the EU will not exist in its present form exactly 3 years from today" (my emphasis)
waz-24-7 wrote: In 3 years The EU will have disbanded and not exist OR the EU will remain in existence.
Waz's restated understanding of the challenge. It seems to me that:

The EU will have disbanded and not exist is what Hedge-fund said in his FIRST statement, i.e. the EU won't last the next 3 years as picked up by Waz

and the EU will remain in existence is what Waz said in his statement, i.e. ..... the EU. I see it lasting out into the future, reformed, secure and stronger albeit reformed etc.

I think you're right, Turtle - on Hedge-fund's part.

I'd say that Waz's interpretation:

In 3 years The EU will have disbanded and not exist OR the EU will remain in existence.

is the correct one based on the exchanges above.

Otherwise they're both saying the same thing

"The EU will exist in three years time, but not in its present form"!

Typical pub argument/bet

They are both different statements as we well know...but how I read it is ... in its present form exactly 3 years from today? that was the bet

OK gentlemen
I have made an unambiguous statement of the bet as I have taken it.
Take it or leave it hedge fund.

Of course the EU will not be in its present form in 3 years. The UK will have left for one.
Certainly there is a small risk that other countries may leave but given the resolve of the strongest members I think and hope not.
It would be in the UK;s interest for it to disband but the risk is that individual countries revert to political and finite boundaries that we saw after the last world war.
Then the same territorial and political squabbles will likely turn into another war. Just as they did in 1914 and again in 1940.

Peace in Europe Peace in the World. A noble and just slogan.

Firstly there has been no confirmation of exactly what the bet is.......given the discussions on the forum over the last few days it would be unlikely any agreement between the two parties on exact wording of the bet.

Secondly gambling on an internet forum does open up a number of issues which could result in investigation or even closure of the forum.

My suggestion is that if the two parties are serious about a bet, they take it off line and maybe engage a third party (Suggest Tulips) to hold the bet and then claim the money in the time frame agreed.

So no gambling on the forum, future posts will be deleted.

However, donations to Tulips are of course welcome.

Thanks for the agreement re explanation.

However, Soner is the forum owner and a moderator and therefore if he deems it necessary then the topic will be locked. He is only trying to protect the forum and sometimes topics or posts do need to be removed to ensure no action is taken.

Thank you.

No probs Soner.

No intention to gamble was meant, merely a difference of opinion resulting in a charity donation.

But I'm sure both parties respect the intervention.

Ok there is no "bet" - both opinions could be right.

Can we settle this so that the only "winner" is Tulips.

I propose that both parties donate £500 to Tulips in lieu of this EU tennis?
