Cataracts

Not wishing to intrude on the laser post but whilst on the subject of eyes does anyone have some input to offer on the subject of cataracts.
I've worn specs to correct short sight since a child, graduated to contact lenses then back to specs when I needed varifocals. After a recent eye test here I was told I had the beginning of cataracts. I always understood that you had to wait until they were "ripe" before you could have them removed, but the eye Dr said no I could get them done right away. he said after the procedure I would no longer need to wear specs for distance. To me that sounded like laser but again he said no. He also said that I would then need to wear specs for reading & close work. I quite like the fact that I can read without specs & at the moment I can see distance perfectly well with the aid of my specs.
Many years ago my daughter who had the same problem as me had laser treatment on both eyes. She was delighted to be able to see clearly without any aid. Now however she needs specs to read. when we are reading something together she puts her specs on I take mine off. I am unsure which way I want to go. It would be nice to hear comments from people who have actually had cataracts removed.
Thankyou in anticipation

Get a second opinion. It is well known that cataract operations are recommended at the drop of a hat in North Cyprus, that's not to say that you don't need one. See the details for Dr Mustafa Guvenir on the laser post or if you are going to UK get a test done there.

Bonnie: I was just like you short sighted - ie I could read small print without specs but needed them for distance, I was also told I would see distances but need glasses for short distance after the op.. It didnt happen like that I am still without specs for short and middle distance but need specs for driving etc. I think on the whole I prefer it that way round if it has to be one or the other.

I dont think it is the opticians fault: I suspect it depends on the condition of the eye before the op. I went to Dr. Hatice of the Eye Clinic if you want another opinion. Found her very caring, has her own surgery and very hygienic.

It was about a year after I was first warned cataracts were forming that I was told I needed surgery.

I went to Dr Guvenir last month, having been told in UK I had cataracts that needed removing . After a very thorough eye test Dr Guvenir has decided to remove cataract on one eye, which he will do later this month. A very caring professional man who does not advocate unnecessary surgery for profit.

I have a friend who went for this simple operation but something went wrong when trying to remove said cataract........... over 6 months later he is still being treated with injections to his eye and has only about 40% vision in the affected eye............

Not always such a straightforward procedure, all operations carry some risk.

Thankyou Ragged Robin Jen & Compass for your input. It's reassuring to hear from real people who have faced or are about to face similar situations
When I return from the Uk in Sept I will definitely make an appointment with Dr Guvenir & be guided by his advice. I am reluctant to give up the ability to read without aid but if that is the option then so be it.
I would be very interested to hear from you again Jen after your procedure is completed. Meanwhile good luck & thank you.
Compass I'm sad to hear of your friends experience. You are quite right with any surgery there is a risk. I just hope that Jen & myself will be among the success rate.

Dr Guvenir removed a cataract from my left eye a month ago . The operation was uncomfortable but painless and over in half an hour . The Evil hospital I bright ,very clean and the care is excellent. I left with a dressing on my eye, painkillers to use if needed overnight and returned to Dr Guvenirs clinic, not having needed the painkillers, the next morning . Dressing was removed to reveal an already brighter world ,my eye was checked and I left with instructions not to wash my hair nor get water in my eye for a week,no swimming for a month ,a prescription for 3 different eye drops which had to be applied 6times a day then after 2 weeks 3times a day . Dr Guvenir also told me to call him anytime I had any worries at all.
I didn't need to call him ,my eye has been problem free and I returned to the clinic yesterday for kontrol appointment . The eye has healed perfectly,my vision has gone from 50% to 90% in that eye and I left with a prescription for new glasses to suit my improved sight and an appointment to see Dr Guvenir again in 6 months .
The cost of all treatment was 2600tl which included 100tl for initial consultation.
Sorry if this is a long winded read,i wanted to reassure Bonnie and anyone else considering surgery here that mine was a very positive and painless experience .

Don't you just love autocorrect? Was it the Etik Hospital rather than the Evil hospital?

Thankyou so much Jen I really appreciate you going to the trouble of sharing your experience. I'm in the U.K at present, when I return I'll make my app with increased confidence. Thanks again Lyn.
