Computer speed-up

I was considering getting a new computer as my current laptop is getting on a bit, but instead had a solid state drive installed to replace the original hard drive, as well as extended memory. Can't believe the difference in speed - my computer is now the Usain Bolt of the techie world! Just though I'd mention it as it's made such a bit difference to working on the internet and might be helpful for anyone else considering an upgrade of their computer.

Hi MoBry,
We have recently replaced our master hard drive with a solid state hard drive.
Kept old hard drive as a slave, with photo's, docs etc on it.
What a difference, Usain Bolt and more
Would definitely recommend this quick fix.

MoBry, good helpful post. Being as much a computer geek as you are, how much please (approx is fine), where and how long did it take? Thanks in advance. What spec and make was it? Only running a laptop, no desktop PC in operation. Anybody's advice is most welcome.

If its of any help, just bought a 250gb SSD (Crucial) to replace the one in one of my PC's - I don't need anything bigger as I run a removable 2tb USB hard drive on the same PC - gives me the option to keep it as a backup or move it from PC to PC (yes I have more than one PC, that's because I am geeked), it has cost me £55.56 including the postage to a UK address and will be with me next week when my wife returns home again! This should give me an increase in speed on boot up and general operation of around 4 to 5 times. If you are going for SSD then buy a good one from a good brand name and get it big enough for your needs! But not so big that you store loads of crap on it - lol.
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

Totally agree with Waddo.
I made the change two years ago - significant reduction is start up time for Windows and applications load faster - and internet pages open quicker.

Go for a 240GB SSD and load the operating system and applications onto it, including something like Norton Security.
But keep a SATA 3 HDD, say 2TB, in the PC (not laptop) as a second drive to store data, photos etc.
Then have a removable, external SATA 3 HDD, say 3TB, so that once a week you can back up everything from the 2TB HDD onto it.
And keep the back up drive somewhere safe where a burglar will not find it if he decides to steal your PC!!!

I bought the SSD and memory extension in the UK and my daughter brought it over for me. I'm sure a computer shop like Laconic or any techie friend could do the changeover. It really is amazing how much faster my computer works, makes me jump sometimes

Forgot, Tomsteel, price was close to what Waddo paid. It took a day for the changeover and I haven't looked back. No more staring at the computer waiting for things to happen, it's more like Flash Alec these days!
