We have over 40 pigeons on our site does anyone have any ideas how to get rid of them ,apart from a gun

They are making a right mess on the site and buildings

For goodness sake, Keith, we have enough arguments about dogs and cats, dont start on pigeons - mmm on second thought, put the cats on the roof?

Seriously, I believe there are a lot of places in the UK with pigeon (and seagull) problems - maybe a websearch would suggest some solutions?l

Seem to recall this problem coming up before. Wasn`t on 44 was it?

Had the problem in the complex where we lived in Australia, but the Strata Council got the municipality to deal with it. But , and I know it sounds daft, if you can put up balloons or toys of creatures such as vulture,s it really DOES frighten the pidgeons away. But beware, they are territorial and yu get rid of them, but after a while they return.

Ask the Belediye if they have any ideas.

By the way, when I first moaned in Australia as our apartment was one of the worst hit by these little birdies (their droppings rots the paintwork) some bright spark suggested I sat on mky balcony with a gun and fired at them.. ! Firstly I could not do that and the thought of sitting 12 hours a day on the balcony, gun to the readydid not quite seem the ideal life style.

There really are several remedies, and I think there are organisaitons here, but again ask the Belediye what they would suggest and/or where you can go to get the appropriate deterrents to them. Or google. remember Trafalgar Square in London was one of the first places to try to deal with it.

Tough life being a pidgeon, = no one seems to love you!

Did you know that Pidgeons won't sit on anything that has been sprayed with WD40? Strange but true.

You can buy the metal strips here that you put on the edge of your roof which will help to keep them away, they can't perch. It is expensive though, SparkyMike has installed some of this and also drilled some screws along the edge of the roof and then ran fish wire, this has also helped with the problem. I did google how to get rid of pigeons, lots of very inhumane ways, yeast mixed in wet bread and re baked, apparently it expands in their tummy, killing them, have not tried it. They will always roost near water so if your pool is an overflow type this is what is attracting them to your villa. Also chicken wire around your water tank and solar panel, this will help deter them from perching. Ours are still perching next door as they have not done any of the above, we have also taught the dogs to chase after them when they land to drink, slowly slowly is the motto . Hope this helps

We had the pointy wire put all along the guttering where they used to sit and make a mess on the patios etc. They now sit on the roof and under the solar panels!!!! We have a dog deterrent which has actually caught a couple over time, but I dont recommend it as the remains are not pleasant to move!!!! I really do not know of a permanent deterrent, I also googled and tried to find ways and means - found metal owls in UK but they were a horrific price - and the man I contacted said he had pigeon trouble anyway!! so if anyone comes up with a sure fire method let us all know!!

Sure fire method???? don't think there is one. It is a bit like garden weeds, you deal with them and they keep coming back! But one has to try.
Good luck.
Interesting that you say they like water, but where I lived in Australia was mid city in a converted brewery! Apparently when it was a brewery they were a real pest, so do you think they were still looking for the beer, or was it the communal pool at the back (but not near where the pidgeons came and nested and pooped!)m

Throw some breadcrumbs on the floor, that will get them off the buildings.

Sorry but you will never get rid of them. Any area supports a given population governed by the supply of food and water. You can kill every one and within a month another gang of similar size will have taken their place. But you can discourage them from your own house in several ways:-

1. Out of season and when you're away, put your pool on recirculate and keep the water level below their reach.
2. Never put any food out for birds or animals - pigeons eat anything and everything.
3. A dummy owl or hawk will work for a week or two - maybe for several months if you move it weekly.
4. Just as it's getting dark scare them off your roof so it doesn't become a night roost. I burst a paper bag or fire an ice cube at the roof tank with my catapault.
5. String fishing line fairly tautly about 6-9ins high along ridge lines etc. or weave it about 1ft apart across areas they like to perch. They don't see it as easily as wire, string or spikes and that upsets them - also it's not so unsightly, it's very cheap and it doesn't rot.

I'm with Rose on this one - put a ladder where the cats can get up onto the roof...

An Australian friend of ours swears by bird seed soaked in rum to kill the blighters off. We are going to give it a try and will post the result, if any, on here.

Rule 1: dont feed them
Rule 2: refer to rule 1

Or feed them popcorn seeds, aparently they explode

KC: Many a true word spoken in jest! The neighbourhood cats patrol my and my neighbour's roofs (without benefit of ladder) and we dont seem to have a pigeon problem. Just a problem with barking dogs!

Now can anyone tell me how to get the cats and dogs turn their attention to mice?
