Student visa process - for my son

Hello,

I'm a British Citizen and I've been living in Cyprus with my children for a number of years. TIll now they have not required any visa as they have been under 18.

My son will be turning 18 shortly and will be in need of a visa. He's started university here in North Cyprus and I wanted to know what the procedure would be.

Thus far I've heard so many different things, ranging from same process as mine with student letter, blood test etc, to simply get a student letter, go straight to Lefkosia, and they will issue a visa immediately - with the student letter, my passport showing my yearly residency and a Muchta letter.

Please help,

sophie

Rather than go onto a Forum where you might receive half a dozen different answers, it would probably pay you to contact the proper authorities.

We will be doing that, however was hoping someone may have gone through a similar situation, given the number of English/European/foreign teens on the island living with their parents.

I had assumed the role of this forum to provide information and to help other members with advice as well as the other commercial aspects it provides. Obviously a miscalculation on my part given your attitude, Sophie

Hi AFC,

I really don't think that there was anything at all wrong with sophie's response, given that you said: -

"Thus far I've heard so many different things, ranging from same process as mine with student letter, blood test etc, to simply get a student letter, go straight to Lefkosia, and they will issue a visa immediately - with the student letter, my passport showing my yearly residency and a Muchta letter."

The way I read it, she was agreeing with you that you do need advice from someone who can actually give an authorative explanation of the requirements, and as you have explained that you have had conflicting accounts from different sources, the only way to guarantee accuracy seems to be to go to the relevent authorities...

Please bear in mind that it is easy to misconstrue the intent behind a written reply, and confuse it with the sort of ill mannered response which you have just made

How right the comment I have underlined above is! When I first read Sophie's comment I thought "how unhelpful and off-putting - it is no wonder that this forum is so sadly being reduced to a form of Exchange and Mart with no one able or willing to hold on intelligent conversation and exchange of views "

I am not "thinking evil" but on re-reading several times it still comes over the same. I do not think it was in the least unreasonable of the op to want to hear experiences of others in the same situation - that is a major role of a good , well moderated forum and can often help people to avoid pitfalls in dealing with the beaurocracy of another country! Sadly there seems to be a nucleus of posters who are too sure of themselves to allow other views or even uncertanties and they seeem to be taking over and putting off those with a wider range of interests.

By the way, I think AFC meant "Muhtar" - or "Mukhtar" if you want to transliterate into English!

The first post states "Thus far I've heard so many different things....
- but then ends "Please Help."
Sophie points out that "...onto a Forum where you might receive half a dozen different answers..." - as has already been admitted....
The first post states "..ranging from same process as mine..." - so this is perhaps a question as to whether there has been a change from the OP's personal experience?
I would suggest that the role of this (and any and all other) forum(s) may include giving advice which may be - but frequently is not - correct or accurate. By seeking advice on a forum, only the personal experience of others can be obtained, with no guarantee that the true, actual legalities etc have held in each or any case.
Given the above, (IMO) Sophie's reply is the best advice - it may have been rather brief and terse, but it is accurate and to the point, and (IMO) not "ill-mannered". I would (and have) only ever sought advice on forums as guidance....

Yes well all you have said seems to me to be self evident, Jofra, However for instance, if I had a medical problems I would not take the advice of someone on the forum as to how best to treat it, but if I was frightened and pluzzed I might well be helped and comforted by sharing experiences with someone else who had faced it and could tell me what to expect. Lots of people have, in fact, sought the opinions of others on topics ranging from the best optician or dentist to where to find the best fish and chips. One may not actually take the advice but sometimes other views help to clarify one's own : and a forum should (I repeat should) be a good way of accessing a range of experience.

Sophie's advice may have been well intentioned but if so it was very badly expressed and was (imo) ill mannered and uneccessarily off putting and I still consider is the sort of attitude that is putting people off this forum. I do also accept the the original post might also have been misleading. The moral is surely that people should think more and pay more attention not just to what they say, but how they say it - but I dont think I want to got down that route again tonight!

I still also feel that there is generally a mindset amongst certain posters that is very cliquish and designed to reject what it sees as interlopers.
