We went for about a 3 mile walk along Ak Deniz beach on Sunday, we were really shocked to find that we needed to throw away our footwear because of the huge amount of crude oil stuck to the soles.

You cannot avoid it because you cannot see it. This is such a shame as we love the wildness of this beach

I can only recommend that you wear only shoes which you want to throw away and take a spare pair so you can get back into your car!

Hello Suehowlittle,

We will return to this lovely north Cyprus and like to walk along sea water.
Please tell us where is this Ak Deniz beach.

I don't know what the shoreline, or just above it, is like this year but last year I was saddened to see how much rubbish had been deposited along it. Today's news http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-39931042 reminded me of what I saw last year at Ak Deniz. Deserted beaches sound wonderful bit the reality is they become the world's dustbin in no time if not cleaned up.

It's a sad fact that the perennial problem with littering is exacerbated by the dumping of litter at sea undertaken by other Mediterranean countries like Syria.... they have huge waste ships that take domestic and dangerous waste from hospitals etc. out to sea and simply dump it... Much of this waste is then washed up on poor old Cyprus. Shame on the countries who practice this barbaric process of contaminating the sea... I know we don't like landfill but it's the lesser of two evils in my opinion...

Last time I was up at the Karpaz the beaches were heavily polluted with tonnes of shredded plastic.
The locals confirmed it was from ships dumping waste at sea with the rubbish being washed up on the shores.
I'm so glad I have the memories and photos of 'paradise' when it truly was just that.
