Lots of small boats and the Guvenlik milling around just off the Oris beach bar along from the Merit complex in Alsancak.
Any ideas?

They are sinking an old coastguard boat as a scuba diving site.

Or death trap/hazard to sea-life and shipping... I wonder if an environmental impact study has been completed? Er no I don't. Only a mental one I'll warrant.

Actually its all being done to encourage marine life. It will be hugely beneficial as over the years this vessel will become haven to lots of marine animals, etc. kind of on par with an artificial reefs benefits. i think its a great idea personally, thousands flock to the shipwreck in the south to dive and explore and hopefully this will bring in budding dive enthusiasts from all over to come explore. it could help promote wreck diving in the north and boost the economy as well as at the same time its giving a new lease of life to the vessel as opposed to being dismantled n rotting in some site somewhere.

Much better to encourage people, particularly young people, to use their energies in an educational sport like scuba diving, rather than the ones that are really dangerous to marine life, not to mention people, like speed boats and jet skies!

I understand why it is being done... I worry that pollution will result. Regards the SCUBA diving... that is all fine so long as it too does not lead to negative ecological impact upon what is a precariously balanced system as it is.

I take it that this is just the hull of the boat and all the running gear has been removed and fuel emptied and tanks scrubbed?
