What are you? A Kindle or a book person?

Hi

All this book talk got me wondering about a kindle. I have always been adamant that I would never get a kindle, but then I was the same about mobile phones!
I love books, the feel of them, being able to turn the page. I like knowing how much left to read by the thickness left. I love browsing in bookshops. I am also nosey and like to see what others are reading, but that's difficult with a kindle .

I really like cookery books and looking at the pictures (I didn't say I could read ). Do you get pictures with a kindle?

So which are you and why

i belive that you can get magazines and newspapers on kindle so must assume it deals with pics as well

Both now. Kindles are great when you are travelling and don't want to haul loads of books around with you. I can also send documents to my kindle so I can load up directions, itineraries, copies of hotel and travel reservations and even photos of our passports in case of loss. It's much smaller to carry around than a laptop - mine has 3G so you can use it to access the internet but sometimes that can be a bit slow. While I was in UK earlier this year and didn't have access to a laptop, my husband sent me photos and documents - mind you only in black and white. At home, my son tends to 'borrow' the kindle so I have a good supply of books to fall back on. I read every day and get through several books a week so I have to have back up.

I bought a Kindle when we left Australia to move here. It's been incredibly handy for travel and also living here without books until our gear finally arrived after six months. I loved unpacking my books and re-connecting with them, but I do have to say that, while I love books and couldn't live without them, the Kindle is incredibly handy for buying books and getting fast access plus no postage costs. As e-books tend to be cheaper, it also means you can try out authors without huge expense before you commit to buying a book. BUT you only get black and white (at least on my 3G Kindle) so you miss out on any colour on the cover and illustrations within the book. I think both Kindle and books are great in their own way, but a Kindle will never replace books for me, something about the feel of the page, handling a book, reminds me of visiting the adult library with my mum many moons ago and inhaling the scent of thousands of books. And I was looking at footage of bookstores on the news and just drooling at the line-up of books.

Kindles are great. Never thought I would say it. I tend to use the internet for recipies to be honest and hardly touch a cook book much as I love them.

Get one for Christmas, you will not look back!

Yes I also get most of my recipes from the Internet too. Reading everyones posts makes me realise thre be more to these kindles than I thought! Didn't realise you could store documents on them they do sound handy for travelling too. Think I should have a look at one

The new Kindle Fire HD has a colour screen and is more like a tablet as you can download and watch films etc from the internet on it, so I presume that any books will also have the potential to have colour photos. At only £159 it looks like a bargain!!

Like others here have always loved books. Know nothing about Kindles but am beginning to become interested, they do seem to have many advantages.

Will probably end up as a both person.

Where would anyone recommend to go here to view and buy.

After 7 years living here I reached the point where I had read just about everything that interested me from Girne library - so I bought a Kindle. Now I download all the books I want via torrents - my first download (about 3 hours) contained 80,000 books by 12,000 authors. I have found every book there is from my favourite authors and I can try any author at no cost. I have found books that I read 30 years ago and still remember fondly but are now well out of print.
I load them onto my computer (an ebook occupies about 1MB of disc space) and use Calibre software (also a torrent download) to keep computer and Kindle in sync. I have already got more books than I can probably read in my lifetime and I no longer have to ration myself for fear I will run out of reading material.
I am a total convert.

Right a further little twist on this debate. I don't have a Kindle - but as stated in my book thread have 900 E-Books. I save them on a terra-byte external hard drive & as the size is 3" x 4.5" (the size of a mobile phone) no storage space at all - can you imagine how much space 900 books would take up. If I want to read one I connect the terrabite to my laptop and open the book up & read off the laptop.

Then there is always the IPad ...................

Still love books themselves though, and my big joy was going to car boots and charity shops & finding a little gem to read at a fraction of the cost at a bookstore

I have the basic Kindle but I am updating to the Kindle fire HD I still buy the odd book but wouldn't be without the Kindle so easy to carry about when travelling.

I was given a Kindle as a present, but have to say I prefer books. I like to know how much of a book I have read and how much is left. I also love browsing in book shops and am often inspired by unusual book jackets to read a different author or style. Looking on the internet for downloads just isn't the same. Also I like the feel of a book, whereas holding a Kindle feels rather odd. So although Kindles have uses for holidays in easing the luggage limit, books win for me every time.

You can tell how far into the book by the 'bar indicator' at the bottom of the kindle book page.

We now use Kindle's though when I am out at any markets I still look at the books just in case I am missing something.

I can understand that people like their books but purely for convenience and cost effectiveness we prefer our Kindle's, maybe if we lived in UK where you can buy up to date books fairly cheaply then maybe we would not have moved over to the Kindle. My Kindle's also saves me approx £50 on excess baggage whenever I return to TRNC from UK!

I still read books, my wife was adamant she didn't want a kindle as she loved books too, but she got one for a birthday present from the kids and she loves it infact it's hard to have a conversation with her these days the dam thing is always in her hand
I'm not against them just can't justify spending the money on myself

I read a lot of history books(WW1 and WW2) and wouldn't be without my "books" but i'm finding it difficult to hold some books due to arthritus so i think i'm getting a Kindle for my birthday,basically for novels.

Do not know if the Fire and the Ipad are as good as the kindle in sunshine. Even in the direct sun you can read the kindle no problem something to do with the screen type that the fire and the Ipad do not have. The techies will explain I am sure

I have always been an avid reader and when I went away on holiday I crammed as many books as possible into my suitcase and on arrival tried to locate the Hotel lending library asap. I now have a Kindle and love it. I have found an Internet site which sends me free books every day and I have read some cracking books from both new,
and well established authors. I never thought I would abandon the paper book but I suppose life and technology moves on.

I HATE new technology. I know it has its uses (OK I am here!) but it wastes so much time - even to access a radio programme - and I am sure the people who programme these things make them unnecessarily complicated on the "knowledge is power" principle.

Whenever I budget to buy a bit of techology that I am forced into because I cant relate to something important without it, I then find I am dragged into buying loads of "add ons" and I simply can't afford them.

Also I find reading off a screen trying on the eyes and neck and shoulder muscles.

I am now into stock piling "real" books whenever I can find something I like on a stall for the future, and even so am already finding I hve to re-read from my "private library".

I agree with Paula , I love the feel, touch and smell and associations of books, and I love browsing bookshops and looking at other people's bookshelves - I am more impressed by well stocked bookshelves than a host of expensive gadgets.

Freekindbooks.com is an internet site that sends me free daily Kindle books direct to my e-mail. This is a different site to the one that Ruftysdad kindly gave me - so maybe you could double your free daily kindle book choices (if they send different offers)
