Thanks and congratulations to British Legion
One of the worst and saddest things about having mobilty problems is the exclusion from so many actvities in support of Charities for others. After nearly 20 years attendance I have been really distressed for the last couple of years by inability to attend the ST. Andrews Memorial service. Last year was worse because I could not even get a poppy to wear, as none of the locations selling were accessible to me.
I dont know if the British Legion read my complaint at the time, or whether others had problems, but I was delighted to find a charming lady on a stall at the Catalkoy Lemar (where there is ample parking, or at least should be if people would just exercise a little consideration and common sense about where they leave their cars) selling not just the traditional poppy,, but useful poppy themed trinkets. Even my three dogs are now wearing their poppies with pride , and they are even luminous which is useful as well.
Thank you BL for making me feel at least slightly involved, and for initiative.

RR. if you had have contacted St Andrews church I am sure that arrangements could have been made for someone your side of Girne to pick you up. Perhaps next year.

Re: Thanks and congratulations to British Legion
sorry to take the thread off topic slightly but - I have been truly saddened this year by the agenda of some to try to politicise the remembrance of those who have given their lives that we might flourish... Shame of you. The idea that the poppy is a racist symbol and symbol of imperialism etc. is a far cry from the intended purpose and a cynical attempt to score points for political advancement. Shame on all of you -.... Nobody vote for them please...

What was/is the problem at St. Andrew’s RR? There is a ramp for access to the church, or is it a problem of parking (which is an issue for many people). If it’s something else then I’m sure it could be brought to the Church Council for their consideration.Ragged Robin wrote:After nearly 20 years attendance I have been really distressed for the last couple of years by inability to attend the ST. If it’s transport to the church (at any time) then, as has been suggested by Sophie, a neighbour might be able to help. From previous posts of yours it would seem that we are fairly close, now that we’ve settled into our new home.
PM me if you’d rather discuss this off-line.

Goucho, I can see that you are incensed about something, but I'm not sure what, and who shouldn't I vote for?? Have I missed something in the thread or has something been deleted by the Mods.

Re: Thanks and congratulations to British Legion
I saw something on the BBC news which said (1) that some people who had noting to do with BR were sellling goods in their name,, if so this is disgusting. and (2) that it was trivialising the remembrance by BR to sell goods other than the traditional poppy for the lapel. I disagree with this, I think those who are remembered and those who benefit would be pleased the goods were also giving pleasure and possibly safety. My dogs now have reflective poppies on their collars which help them to be seen in the dark, and my scooter now has a big poppy which catches the light and does the essential job of making it more visible to traffic. Once again, thanks BR
I alsoseem to have missed what Goucho is on about. If it is the usual banning crosses, burqas , headscalves etc. , why cant people just allow others to believe what they want and dispay in it any nonviolent way.
Sophie, Mowgli : Thank you for your kind thoughts. The orginal problem was walking/parking and I have spoken to several members of the Council and botht he previous and present Chaplain about it with no positive outcome. I have , however, since developed other problems which could not b overcome by a lift, but I will pm you about that shortly.

RR, I guess from your many posts on the Forum you have severe disability issues. St. Andrew's Church is poorly sited from both a disability and parking perspective. However, it is but a building. Can you not offer your commitment to Christ at home as I do?

Re: Thanks and congratulations to British Legion
Not all that bad, tom steel: others are a lot worse, the problem with St. A's accessibility is a combination of minor health issues, on top of the main one of osteoporosis, My Cypriot friends would take me there, but I would be too embarrassed to ask people nominally of another religion.tomsteel wrote:RR, I guess from your many posts on the Forum you have severe disability issues. However due to past experience with serious disability of relatives and my sometime voluntary work for Cheshire Homes I am committed to getting greater consideration of and opportunities for the disabled. Maybe relating my own comparatively minor problems is not the best way - but it is the easiest!
You are quite right of course , Church attendance is not really necessary to the worship of God. My attendance at the Remembrance Service is largely a matter of being a way of remembering a deceased loved one who suffered badly mentally during WW2. I think next year I will look into the possibility of accessing the BL ceremony on my mobility scooter. I miss being able to put flowers on a grave in England. I planted a tree in remembrance at Green HIlls, but had bought it before I realised how difficult it was to get there and there is no way I could visit regularly to feed, water and prune it.. I do not even know if it is still alive. The other issue is that most disabled (not prarticularly me I always seem to have too much to do! ) spend too much time alone, and things like being unable to attend Church services and charity coffee morning increase feeling of isolation and can lead to depression.
Getting back to disability, the point is that most disabled people need to be enabled to do things for themselves , rather than help such as lifts. Disability scooters are a great boon, but have limits, and better parking facillties at venues for charity dos or shared taxis or buses would make quite a difference.

Re: Thanks and congratulations to British Legion
Sorry, I am used to seeing abbreviations in official documents first displayed as British Legion (BL) and then used as BL throughout the rest of the document. So when I read the post with BR in it twice it simply caused me confusion as I could not find and explanation for it anywhere. Now it makes sense to me and I do not "scrutinize" nor pick holes in any use of the English Language as a norm, it is more often self explanatory anyway. Maybe it was the Chinese that did it - Blitish Region - lol.

No, just for a laugh is all it is, sometimes things just get way too serious and folks need to have humor in their lives or what is left?

Pedantic, I concede. However, the organisation being referred to is the Royal British Legion (RBL). The Kyrenia Branch organises the annual Flanders Poppy Appeal and the Remembrance Sunday event in the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (TRNC).

For some reason I must have had British Rail on the brain - though goodness knows why!
