Mountain car lights
Sitting on my patio at night I Have a lovely view of Bellapais and the village. I am some what surprised however to see what appears to be car headlights travelling from the top of the mountain and twisting down towards the village.
This has happened for a while so I assume that there is a road/track that takes you past Bellapais and up and over the mountain. Really captivating to think somebody is travelling down what appears to be a very steep accent/decent.
It's fantastic to watch.

Re: Mountain car lights
That's interesting - it prompted me to have a look at a map, and I see that there is a road leading from Kaynakköy (which lies just beneath the huge TRNC flag on the South side of the Beşparmak range) over the top and then down to Bellapais.
I don't know that I'd like to try it in the dark though!

I took that road that leads up passed the big flag over the mountain and came out on the coast road east of Catalkoy.

Re: Mountain car lights
As you come up to Bellapais there is a mini island left into the village straight on takes you up behind Bellapais the right is the army base
The road then bears left and runs up behind Bellapais up past the back of the village and an abandoned church the road then runs round the ravine and runs out of tarmac turning into a forestry track climbing up and over the mountain in a zig zag fashion a good walk in the spring but steep
Would not fancy driving in daylight let alone at night

One way of avoiding the local constabulary maybe, or illegals, or smugglers? I have heard of this road and certainly wouldn't like to use it at any time, especially at night.

Re: Mountain car lights
The army used it quite often a few years back but don't seem to bother anymore, shepherds also use it in battered old Renaults with no tax etc just to get up and down to their sheep/goat hidey holes. I have used it a couple of times - Pajero SWB - and in the summer it is not bad but in the winter especially after rains it can change with the weather - great care is needed in places and make sure your brakes work well - never attempt it on a hunting day, that can get quite interesting!!! I have seen the police on it a couple of times last (2017) year so I don't think it is in great use by illegals/smugglers or dodgy drivers.

Probably just someone trying to avoid the traffic on all the other roads! But I certainly would not like to meet someone coming the other way at night!

I have driven it and as said it certainly is a very, shall we say intersting and testing road to drive even in daylight.

Re: Mountain car lights
Interesting! Last night I saw red and blue flashing lights right along the top of the mountain road - only one vehicle but find it strange as that is the first time I have seen that combination (Police?) of lights up there. Look out what you post - they are watching - lol.

Waddo and Poppy you have my total respect. Not a trip I would care to make even with an up to date modern vehicle.
I watch in awe but totally transfixed. You must have had some amazing views.
