First, I find it strange that all of a sudden a UK paper has taken an interest in a country that the UK will not acknowledge the existence of. To me it seems that they (The Guardian) use the upcoming election and the "thought" that Northern Cyprus will become increasingly "Muslimified" (to coin a word), and therefore become yet another threat to the safe haven of Christian UK, as a stick to beat the Turkish Cypriot people in the UK to vote!

Why the UK is suddenly taking an interest in the workings and future of a country that they have abandoned in almost every respect and why they now are concerned about the failings of yet another peace initiative is quite beyond me. Unless they worry that a new and progressive government will emerge on Monday and write a final end to peace talks, by the utilisation of a plan B or even plan C. So, let's use religion as the stick and carrot to try to turn the minds of the voters?

In truth, all religions are the same - you either believe and are a hardened follower or you believe and pray in your own way! If the Cypriots are truly worried that the erection of the largest Mosque in the Middle East will cause Turkey to have total control over their destiny, then they do have the option of not using it. I have found over the years that you can only "Push" a Cypriot so far and then they become a stone wall, the majority of them are true followers of their religion - in their own way!!!

Unless the UK has some positive idea of how to help a people they have effectively abandoned for decades, they should keep their ideas to themselves!

Apologies to all those who take my scribble as a direct insult and offence to their "PC" thinking.
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

Totally agree with all you say Waddo. Also to add my own observation with regard to 'the faithful'. The comings and goings for Friday prayers are seldom 'settlers' or Turkish Cypriots but the men from Pakistan who are working over here, so in my view the writer of the article hasn't even bothered to do any research.
