A Sorry Tale.

A friend of my wife who lives in Larnaca, a single parent with an 8 year old son, came to stay with us last weekend.

To support them she has to work so sends her son to summer school.

When the boy returned to the school yesterday one of the Teachers asked what he had done over the weekend and he told about the visit, his fun in the pool and on the beach and in the sea playing with other children.

Hard to believe but this is what she said ' you should not go there, they beat children and rape women'

The boy was upset asking his Mum why had they done wrong and what was rape.

It is a fair guess that Teacher was born long after the troubles but indicative of the indoctrination and prejudice that is still going on after all of these years and why there will be no re-unification during our lifetime if ever.

This needs taking further, absolutely outrageous. The teacher needs to be brought in front of authorities, including the highest level in the UN. How on earth are those of today going to understand the atrocities that happened. I'm sure this would not happen in the TRNC.

tingtang, I had to read that post twice to believe what I was reading.

What a disgrace that teacher is. She should be ashamed of herself.

I hope your wife's friend also thinks this is unacceptable and takes the matter further.

I feel so sorry for the little boy involved in this and any other child that comes into contact with this teacher.

So wrong to inflict hatred in children.

Disgraceful but all too common I'm afraid. I think these schools are privately run and not part of the educational system, let us hope she will get some satisfaction from her complaint.

We have had a foot in both camps for the past 15 years and I cannot count the number of times we have had the resentful comment ' why do you want a place over there with the dirty Turks'? Conversely never once on this side have I heard a derogatory comment made about the GC's.

I have long since declined to debate the issues with them because they will not listen, even when reminded that, upon joining EU, they were obliged to re-write school history books because of all the distortions of the truth.

Fear and prejudice are still very much in evidence, even on the evening news on any item concerning North Cyprus they refer to it as the 'So called Republic of North Cyprus'. As for the 'Fear' we know an elderly lady, now in her 80's, who will not cross the border as she is frightened of the Turkish soldiers. Now this is a lady who lived in a mixed community and with her husband hid and sheltered a Turkish family in their home at the height of the troubles until they were able to arrange their escape to UK organised by the British.

The most worrying part of this narrative is the fact that this "teacher" is perpetuating her racist and evil thoughts to the next generation and then on to the next generation ad nauseum. I know you say you have suffered this sort of thing for 15 years, but honestly there must be someone or something that can be done about her, rather than do nothing. The UN would be a good start This isn't a criticism of you, but an observation but you may of course have good reasons why you would prefer to keep quiet.

Terrible but not surprising. I’ve only being coming here just over a year but already witnessed the hate directed (and unfairly imo) towards the north. It is nothing short of bigoted, racist, unacceptable and embarrassing behaviour.

Oddly enough, I was at a wedding in Amsterdam at the weekend and got chatting to a girl who had done a degree (might even had been a masters) and her thesis was the partition of Cyprus. She is totally impartial to both sides and we agreed on that there will have been good / bad behaviour on both sides during the troubles and that the north have been unfairly treated with regards to embargo, sanctions etc.

Anyway, with regards to the OP, I would find out the name of the teacher and report her / him. I would make an audit trail too and if you have no acceptable apology, then take it further.

That person, I will not use the word teacher as it would be an insult to the profession, that person should not be allowed anywhere near young children, whose minds she will poison. It is an absolute disgrace that she can spout such venom to an innocent child. Sadly, she is not alone, and will no doubt get away with it, and will continue to spread the racist virus. If I were the child's mother I would certainly protest, what right does she have to inflict her views on someone else's child.... no right whatsoever! I have lived in the North now for over 9 years, and no, have never ever come across such hatred from either TC's or Turkish people, towards the GC's. It is totally shocking that this kind of thing goes on in what is meant to be a civilised EU member state......

People are not born with prejudices but sadly some teachers use their position to indoctrinate their pupils with their own prejudices, beliefs and bias.
Sadly it happens all around the world at all ages.
For the most part when people leave school or university and go out in the real world they learn facts and make up their own minds.

Not much of a reconciliation if a so called "educated teacher" comes out with these remarks.

I doubt, very much, the UN would take either an interest or action in matters such as these. What can it do? The action should be directed to the School - Head, Board of Governors, Education Minister etc. It is doubtful any action would be taken, ergo, move the child to a better educative environment and tell the press why.

Yes, let us keep on topic.

Were I there I would not prefer to keep quiet although as a 'foreigner' I suspect that I would get short shrift from the School. What I would have done is go and see the local Muhtari (SP?} whom I have known for a number of years as a fair and honourable man and ask his advice which is what I have suggested to the Mum. I am certain that he would have his own words with the school and as a well respected person in the community that intervention would carry far more weight than anything we could do.

BTW - For the sake of correctness I should clarify that it was Greek Cypriot women & children that the Teacher was referring to and not the population generally.

This is normal in the south, they are indoctrinated from a very young age and have no historical facts about what their people/ancestors did and keep trying to do. This is why there will never be a joined Cyprus again. It will take another 50 years to rid them of their hatred and I’m not even sure that is long enough or even if they’re willing to accept what they did.
The even sadder fact is that nearly all of the other international states believe their bile.
TRNC forever, recognition and equality!
