How will getting travel insurance solve the non payment of rental tax? Re the article in Cyprus Today.

Another genius idea from the government.
Even by their own admission it's only going to raise £600-£700,000 a year. God knows how much it will cost in administration to collect it.
Or they could tax hotels and casinos more than sixpence a year. And if they ensure they pay their electric bills that will probably put the electric companies into profit which will mean they can pay tax.


No-one paying any car tax? Put it on petrol. The bonus is you get revenue from the drivers in the South who pop over the border to fill up.

It really isn't that hard

Solved my own question looks as if it will be introduced after the chipping of cars for road tax petrol

ttoli, surely by now you realise they are omnipotent and can do no wrong, (regardless of what it is i) whereas we expats are guilty of absolutely everthing. I love living here, but after 14 years I do which they would, once in a while, admit they are not perfect.

Having read the article i hope they do crack down we have a. 1 bed apartment in iskele on a big site ! Probably the one they are referring to had been let and the tenant has left . They where only paying £200 and after £52 per month maintenance charge included n the rent and 10 % tax that i paid to the tax office its hardly worth renting. Now the tax office have increased tax to 15 % ! Im trying to let it out short term but so far have zero bookings . Ive looked on airbnb and there is aturkish guy renting a two bed for $26 per night he seem sto be booked a lot i wander if hes paying tax! Quite how he can as well as paying for electric water maintenace etc.... then theres russians on airbnb i saw a studio for $11 per night.......do i think they are paying tax ?

The sooner they crack down the better for those who do pay tax !

Anyway back to the start of the thread . So the powers that be are planning a cunning strategy to track visitors more than the current staus quo . So every visitor coming on holiday will have to report to the trnc either on arrival or before and confirm they have travel insurance and their accomodation arrangements. I trust his will be extended to turkish nationals ....er probably not .

Well that will be great for tourism wont it !
i can imagine a large proportion of holiday lets are let to friends and relatives . . Im also thinking c2d is sensationalising things here and saying the authorities is targeting expats only after all its readers are expats and its trying to sell papers . But the article memtions a 1000 homes in famagusta that are let . Firstly living close to famagusta there arent really that many holiday rentals in famagusta and most homes are owned by turkish cypriots there . I dont know the exact source of c2 d but its more likely that because if the tough economic times they are under pressure to ncrease tax revenues . Both locals and expats will be targeted.c2d have focused on the expat thing try sell a few papes and generate interest .

If anything happens its most likely a few prosecutions to create fear . In practice trying to tax mehmet sally or ivan for letting their holiday home for a few weeks to a “mate” is nigh on impossible. Clearly there will be some who are letting their homes a lot more that this but i dont think this is a vast market.

and last week when I was paying the rental tax it was pointed out next time I must bring in contract, passport copies etc, when I explained they were holiday lets therefore contracts are not real contracts that need to be stamped he pointed at the list on the wall and said you need to do. I am hoping it is down to their new system or otherwise working on behalf of customers if I have to register every holiday let my time I give them will be consumed very quickly.

Bit of the rest of the post but i have never had a shortvterm let so ive never paid this this . Im really going to stop advertising for short lets if you have to get a contract stamped etc ?

What percentage tax did you pay and what currency was paid ? No wonderr people dont declare this rental tax bookings could be two or three days and you need to register a contract!

You only need to do it once and then you are given a reference number to use going forward. The rate as at last month was 13%.

These people have been on the books for years and they all have paid tax since the new system has been used. I hope you are right though

sterling and 13% since I think about July, they are just holiday 2 weeks etc, I had the passport numbers of the people who stayed but they were on about the financial contract. Its actual big money in term of my long term lets so I don't understand why they are making it more complicated. weekly holiday lets £750 per week - monthly rent £235.

It is my understanding that the Tax office are well aware of and look up AirBnB and most holiday rental platforms , take note of when the property is showing as booked , then approach the owner at first possibility.

Anyway im awaiting my first booking here below and. Have modified my rates to local turkish lira in the hope when i go to pay the tax (if i get any bookings ) it will qualify for the reduced 1 % tax rate which is in place for 6 months .

I tried to pay rental tax but it was for the month we were in plus one for the next month

I'd been paid so pay my tax sorry come back next month to pay the tax for this month

And come back the month after that to pay next months tax

Then I was told I could pay online

I was given an account number log on and website address

One problem its all in Turkish the EN button doesn't work
