Pool pumps

How many times a day and for how long should a pool pump run for in winter and summer. The pool is approximately 10m x 5m

What environmental factors is the pool exposed to? Trees/leaves, dust, bird droppings, passing traffic, sun-tan lotion application - the list is endless! As a guide, and our pool is slightly smaller, our general times are winter- 2.5 hours, summer 3.5 hours per day, however, it is environmental factors and daily usage conditions affecting your individual pool that will dictate pool pump timings, not posters opinions. IMOH!

we do two lots of 2 hours per day in summer, one of them just before you are going in for a swim to get rid of rubbish and floating leaves etc, for winter 2 hours per day should be sufficient

Our pool is 12m x 5m and elevated about 1m above ground (due to sloping plot and position of house).
Winter is easy - just a one hour period.
Summer is 4 x 30 minutes throughout the day - when it is just the two of us, no suntan creams.
Proper pool maintenance helps - always maintain the chlorine level, add 500mls of CTX 60 every two weeks to prevent algae growth (summer only).
Backwash when necessary - not on a regular timetable.

Some years ago I calculated that the pool pump used £0.40 of electricity per hour.

if you look to this seriously..

eg, by searching the net for proper pool circulation in hot climates+ required chemical levels and so on, then you can easily find out that a pool during summer should be circulated minimum 1 to better 1,2 to much better 1,5 times net a day.

10x5 x 1,5 meter average depth + balance tank 5 - 10 = say 80 tons.

required circulation is therefore 80-120 ton net circulation.
net= taking the pumps values on a certain pressure loss in the piping-filter system.
roughly you can say: 12-15 tons/ hr net circulation for a 1 hp pump.

80tons day /15 (12) = 5,5 (6,5) hrs of pump running time in the summer.
up to
120tons day/15(12) = 8 to 10 hrs a day.

for the four winter month (nov to feb) i would suggest half of it. 3 hrs.

if you do not circulate properly, then your pool might look nice, but chemical values are well above what would be suggested for a healthy pool.

I stopped buying CTX-60 locally in 2017 when the price increased at most suppliers to about 40 Euros for 5 litres.

I now buy in the South for 8 - 10 Euro - see: https://pool-plus.com/product/ctx-60-al ... l-5-liters

Alternative products (Algae Protectors) from Turkey were available in 2017 at about 15 Euros for 5 litres but I have never tried them.
