bringing in excess baggage
can you bring in excess baggage ( ie 3 trunks around 150kg ) through Larnaca airport and bring them into the North, or do you have to send them to Ercan Airport.
Just looking at prices and to send them to Larnaca it's quite reasonable, but would they let them pass through customs,

Re: bringing in excess baggage
i dont think there are any weight restrictions at the border but if there large trunks you almost certainly have customs wanting to have look at the contents
Karaman, its not all wax jackets and green wellies anymore

Re: bringing in excess baggage
With such a large amount of luggage you stand a chance of being pulled at Larnaca as well as Metehan.
At Metehan if stopped you risk the chance of paying a lot of duty especially if any of the items are new, you may be seen as a trader. Same would apply at Ercan.
Travelling through any customs with more than the norm for a casual traveller is a potential problem.

Re: bringing in excess baggage
Like most people, when we first got the keys to our place we initially had a lot of stuff over to bring over. it became like a mission impossible every time, packing and repacking, trying to get a quart into a pint pot (or a kilo into half a kilo). Never mind we thought, once the first few trips are done that'll be it and we can travel light from then on.............. six years on and we are still flippin doing it!!!!

Re: bringing in excess baggage
Nine years on and we are still bringing stuff over. Last time it was a Kenwood (very heavy) foodmixer and liquidiser. I hate using all my weight for things like that but needs must and I had no intentions of buying it in the South! If I could have bought it here I would have done.
Have to bring a food processor next trip. Just will not buy brands which are unknown to me so that's another 6 or 7 kilos - never mind, we don't bring books any more, use Kindles instead which save lots of kilos.
What is the cost of bringing about 100 kilos here anyway? Anyone know? Would use Pegasus probably.

From UK trying using Valentine's. We've used them several times to bring excess baggage - much cheaper than paying airline rates. The ship overland to Famagusta. It's a bit of a hassle having to go to Famagusta to clear customs but if it's used stuff you'll have no duty to pay.

Re: bringing in excess baggage
thanks for the quick response, I probably didn't explain my situation right, we are coming from Perth in Western Australia, and believe it or not we have tried to get quotes from around 10 shipping Companies, not one has returned our calls, then I found a company called Excess Baggage who will fly the 3 trunks out to Cyprus, but arriving at Larnaca, they would arrive around 3 days after we had arrived, so we would have to return to Larnaca to retrieve the trunks and then pass over to the North again, If I could get a shipping Co to bring them over that would be better and cheaper as the quote to fly them out was $1290.00 I just can't believe that it's so hard to find a Company that will ship out my things. I know Perth is at the end of the world and very isolated but container ships arrive here all the time. Anyway If someone has any information that can help me I would appreciate it.

Re: bringing in excess baggage
There are plenty of taxi services that have large passenger vans. How big are the trunks? Maybe they would fit in one of these taxis? You would still have to be in Larnaca to clear the trunks through customs, though you may be lucky crossing the border here and not get searched!! If you think this may be an option I can ask a friend of mine who has one of these taxis. I guess if the seats can be folded down or removed there may be room for the trunks.

Re: bringing in excess baggage
Thanks tiadxb, the trunks are 1.145mm long 530mm wide 420mm high, and each weigh around 55kg, If I can fly them out it would be better, as it would save waiting for a container to arrive which could be around 3 or 4 months, and the price I was quoted was very reasonable, considering the time it would take them to arrive by sea, I have to get in contact with this Company again Monday and see if the can fly into Ercan, that would save me going South, If you could get me a price for a larger Taxi that would be great, and thanks again tiadxb for your time,

Re: bringing in excess baggage
If its any help I am doing what you are suggesting and have done it before. I am sending a number of boxes 600KG total to Larnaca and hiring a van from SIXT and driving them to the North, even if I have to make two runs. NO PROBLEM

If you knew somebody where you can leave the stuff and you could then bring it over bit by bit.

Re: bringing in excess baggage
Asked our friend, Mehmet, and he can take you to pick up the three trunks at Larnaca airport. It should cost around £60. If you're still interested in doing it that way, message me and I can pass on your info to him!
