For those who have holidayed in Thailand

Anyone who has been on holiday to Thailand, did you have any vaccinations before you went. We will be going to Bangkok for a month in September to visit our daughter, so not sure if you need the recommended vaccinations, i.e Tetanus, Hapatitis A and Yellow Fever? Advice would be good

Consult NHS direct, travel vaccinations. We went 2 years ago, already had most mentioned by yourself.

Living here I would definitely have Tetanus & Hepatitis A even if not going to Thailand. We have never bothered with Yellow Fever except when it was compulsory very many years ago.
The lady chemist opposite Starling on the Bellapais Road is very good & does vaccinations at very little cost.

Heaven, if you decide that you should get a yellow fever vaccination please be aware that you can not get it this side. You must go south to the old state hospital in Nicosia. All the details can be found on old posts in the Medical section.

Thank you for all your replies so far. My worry about vaccinations is that I have auto immune disease so maybe need to see Doc. But I am sure loads of people go to Thailand and not have vaccinations?

Heaven, to be honest I don't know of anyone who has gone to Thailand and NOT had the necessary jabs. I suspect members of my family didn't have the Yellow Fever one though. Pays your money and takes you choice with them all I guess.

Ozankoy, do you have to have a doctors prescription for the injections at the chemist?

If you are going to tourist places then no vaccinations needed but if you are planning going native then please seek medical advice or go see a chemist at the very least for advice.

We did not need a prescription bit if you have auto immune disease then you probably should consult a Dr before having any vaccinations which would basically infect you with a mild dose of the said disease.

If you had all your vaccinations as a child you will have had enough tetanus.
I got a Hep A vaccine years ago for work.
Went to Thailand in September didn’t have yellow fever vaccination.

We have just returned from a month in the Philippines and two weeks in Bangkok, we did not have any vaccinations at all we were both fine.

karmels, if you had NO vacs at all then you were pushing your luck. Last year one adventurous grandson and a small backpacking group took no precautions. Five were absolutely fine, one caught Hep and it was 4 weeks before the airline would allow him to fly back to UK.

I've spoken to son-in-law this morning who for business reasons flies a lot to Thailand and the Far East and his multi-national company arrange all the medical requirements. His advice (take it or leave it) is as follows: DO NOT GET YOUR INFORMATION FROM A TRAVEL CLINIC. They will recommend that you need absolutely everything. HOWEVER "Fit For Travel" the very highly rated department makes it clear that it really depends on what and where you intend to go in the country. You will not require Rabies unless you intend to explore the hinterland.

Go through your itinerary and work it out. If you staying in good quality hotels you should need combined diphtheria/tetanus, together with polio and Hep A. If you intend to go further into the hinterland then it is strongly advised that you have a Malaria jab. The best of the advisory information is on http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk
