Ants Year !!!!!
Hi
Is it just us this year or are people seeing the same infestation of ants that we are experiencing
We have lived here for 14 years years and this without a doubt is the worst we have seen and have been swamped with them from end April
Anyone any hints on how to get rid of them please

Re: Ants Year !!!!!
I started a thread a few weeks ago when ants ate my friend’s linen shirt while she slept!
Someone suggested a few drops of clove oil in water in a spray bottle where they run & to soak cotton wool in the solution for the wardrobes so we did this.
The ants do not seem to like it & it is less toxic than a conventional spray.
We have Pestaways in our sitting room & have had hardly any flies this summer.

Re: Ants Year !!!!!
Last year we had millions of the tiniest ants I've ever seen. Got in all the food,(including a few in the fridge and masses inside the cooker) spent a fortune on new sealed containers, they were every where, never seen anything like it. They didn't like white vinegar either and finally after about 4 months, they went away. But for a couple of months we could still hear them nibbling away at the cement behind some of the electricity sockets in the kitchen.

Re: Ants Year !!!!!
It was myself that advised on clove oil in water in a spray bottle. Apparently it is more effective with a mix of peppermint oil too, but I've found just the clove oil and water works well. Spray round anywhere they are getting in, if it's around sockets, put the solution on a cloth and wipe round. I add a few drops of clove oil to my kitchen counter spray as well, and touch wood, been ant free inside since using it. It's much safer to use, especially in the kitchen than insecticides.
I had those tiny ones that Sophie had a few years ago in the loo....they were going for toothpaste and brushes! So those ones obviously didn't mind mint at all. The clove spray got rid of them pretty quickly, and touch wood, never had them back.
I don't like using powerful insect sprays as a rule, but sometimes have had to. For the first time ever, had some cockroaches in the bottom loo and the Sertex in the orange and white aerosol can sorted them out. Have read on this forum several times that wolf spiders and tarantulas go round in pairs, well am sure that cockroaches go round in threesomes!

pest aways take 2 to 3 weeks to get rid of them . When you think the ants are deep underground to get away from the rain and floods . Its not a way to do it over night but i have them plugged in all over my house and seen no pests this year . We were plagued with ants for years pulling out cupboards one year they got straight into our Christmas pud that i had been lasing with brandy all year . How they found there way home who knows . We now dont have that problem they do work but not over night

Re: Ants Year !!!!!
Same with the clove oil, one spray will not entirely eliminate them. It will kill them if you directly spray on them, but you have to keep up the spraying until they are clearly gone, and then continue periodically to spray as a deterrent. It's obviously better if you can get the nest, but that's not always possible. It's just safer to use inside than toxic insecticides, especially in the kitchen with food about.
I have no experience of the Pestaway, but glad that it works for some. I note that some said it wasn't working, but maybe they hadn't left it long enough to report back on. I had another make of plug in repellent, and it made no difference whatsoever.

I was looking for that thread earlier but couldn't find it.ozankoys wrote:I started a thread a few weeks ago when ants ate my friend’s linen shirt while she slept!
I inherited (not just) a large trunk from my Cousin after she passed away. She kept all her clean bed linen in it and it smelt absolutely, well, i don't know how to describe it, but now i know what it is it seems more acceptable. Anyhoo, this trunk is made of Camphor Wood, and apparently insects don't like the smell. So i was rather hoping i might be able to get one in TRNC so i can bring my linen shirts out next time and store them in, though i don't think i'd want to go out to a restaurant in the evening smelling of Camphor, as i think apart from perhaps keeping the insects away from me, it might keep people away too lol.

If you need to locate one of your previous threads, just click on 'View your posts', and you'll see everything that you have ever posted!ozankoys wrote:I started a thread a few weeks ago when ants ate my friend’s linen shirt while she slept!
To narrow it down, you can then use the 'search these results' facility - just enter a relevant search term in the search box above the post (not the main search box at the top of the page).
To find a post that someone else has made (either a thread that they started, or a contributory post within a thread), either click on their name at the top of any of their posts OR click on 'Members' at the top of the page and search for their name using one of the available methods, and when you get to their profile page, click on 'Search user's posts' which will display every post that the person has made. Refine the results if you like, using the 'Search these results' box.
Have fun!

The good thing about Pest Aways is if you come & go when you get back you dont have a house full of the pests returned because all these tips have not been done so for your 2 week holiday spent itching chuck out all the food because the ants got it . With things like testy flys and such surly for a little money it must be worth having this protection Bug less i love it being as i used to be on the menu every night . Spray under the bed all round house just in case the little blighters have got in waiting for the meal on your feet . I dont get that anymore . Also i am not paying a fortune every year on spray bit cream . One month with ease also environment friendly you get your money back . Surly it is a no brainier or it is to me

Re: Ants Year !!!!!
These Pestaways do sound good, however would it be fair to say they may not be suitable for every scenario? For example, if they take 2/3 weeks to clear, looking at our scenario, if we only visit our place twice or three times a year for 2 weeks at a time, by the time they've started working after we get there, it'll be time to come home. That is to assume it would not be advisable to leave the electric on for months on end without occupancy?

Re: Ants Year !!!!!
If you dont leave your electric on then they wont work if in that case you will be running alive . Cant see the point in turning off electric if you have a pool then you would not . But people with more upgraded situations this obviously does not apply to you keep doing the suggested when you gone home all back . In the past some people returning to there units have been taken very ill if not some have been hospitalized due to bits when there bedding has been left got straight in . If you dont live here & turn your electric off then come back to what ever . This is your choice

Absolutely not knocking the product gates don't get me wrong. We do know a few people in similar situations though and all advise turning electric off if away for long periods, at least those that don't i assume have alarms and or CCTV. We even turn our plug in scent diffusers off here in the UK whenever we go out even if it's just shopping for the afternoon. Not worth risking a fire.gates wrote:If you dont leave your electric on then they wont work if in that case you will be running alive . MnM, the Amazon website will have all the details you need including pictures, and feedback from buyers. They seem to work very well for many people.
