I'm hearing 1st reports that several crossing points have just been closed (2.45 Fri 28th Feb) due to fears of Coronavirus.

Obviously more as it breaks.

Presidential Spokesman Barış Burcu also said in a statement that "according to the decision of the Greek (Cyprus) Council of Ministers, he has suspended the passes at the Lokmacı, Derinya, Aplıç and Bostancı gates to be re-evaluated a week later." Explaining that the Greek leader Anastasiadis called Akıncı and informing him, Barış Burcu said that this decision was taken on the grounds of preventing the spread of Coronavirus, Anastasiadis said that the other crossing points will remain open to transitions and the measures at these gates will be increased. Here is the explanation of Barış Burcu: Greek leader Nikos Anastasiadis called President Mustafa Akıncı for the second time and made a decision about the transition points of the Greek Council of Ministers. According to the decision of the Greek Council of Ministers, Nikos Anastasiadis said that they had suspended the passages at the doors of Lokmacı, Derinya, Aplıç and Bostancı to be re-evaluated a week later. Stating that this decision was taken on the grounds of avoiding the danger of spreading Coronavirus, Anastasiadis said that other crossing points will remain open to passes and the measures at these gates will be increased. In his phone call, President Akıncı asked the Greek Leader if there was a positive Coronavirus incident in the south. On the response of the Greek leader that there is no positive case in the south, He stated that there were no coronavirus cases with positive results in the north. Recalling that at the meeting of the Bi-Communal Health Technical Committee on 3 February, there was a consensus about the need to take measures at Coronavirus, rather than the transition points, rather than the unilateral step, the Bi-Communal Health Technical Committee came together. He said it would be true. President Akıncı conveyed to Anastasiadis that he / she believes that it would be right to take measures related to this issue in Cyprus and through the Bi-communal Health Technical Committee together, and that it should not be alarming the societies with unilateral steps. The following news has just been received from the British Residents’ Society which we are sharing for the benefit of all readers in the TRNC who may be wishing to cross to, or return from. the south of Cyprus.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

The following has just been confirmed by the Prime Minister’s Legal Counsel

The crossings at LEDRA STREET, (Pedestrian Crossing, Nicosia)

ASTROMERITAS (Bostanci, Guzelyurt)

DHERYNIA (Near Famagusta) and

LEFKA (Near Guzelyurt)

Will be closed for SEVEN days from 06.00am tomorrow 29th February 2020, apparently as part of measures to prevent CORONAVIRUS.

All other border crossings, however, WILL REMAIN OPEN.

Why just a few of the crossing points will be closed, why not all of them?

It’s almost as good an idea as having a peeing end in a swimming pool.

Have there been any confirmed cases of Coronavirus in either the North or the South of the island?

I would have thought it is so they can concentrate their efforts on monitoring people crossing?

Maybe, just maybe (to credit the South with a modicum of common sense) they may have reduced the number of crossing points to make it easier to check temperatures of those crossing. Just a thought!! Maybe I'm being too generous and yes, it's just a vote catcher down South.

That would make sense if they only had the one thermometer :)

Otherwise it would be more difficult, because everyone wanting to cross would be crowding through a limited number of crossing points...

Their reasoning is, as usual, opaque!

Just been watching a video of the demonstration at the Ledra Street crossing, quite violent, and looks like the crowds are pushing through from the South, apparently that crossing point has now re-opened.

Begs the question if it would be possible to "lock down" a town or village here doesn't it.

One Way system = IGNORE IT.
Exit and entrance to a Supermarket = iGNORE IT.
No smoking inside a Restaurant = IGNORE IT.
As for all the regulations and laws regarding driving a car = IGNORE THE LOT.

Hence "lock down a village/town" = JUST IGNORE IT.
