Does anyone know please where I can buy Pearl Barley, preferably East of Girne in Ozankoy area? Also what it is called in Turkish?

I had an idea this had been answered before - if so I apologise for asking for a repeat but I tried a search with no result.

Rose-I am trying to identify a lot of local ingredients.
The best translation I have come up with is 'Bugday'.

Tempo have occcaisonally had it in the past. Otherwise it has to come from the South. In my experience, there is not a local equivalent. Bugday means wheat, I think, not barley.

Yes Hippo, Bugday means wheat, and wouldnt work in the recipe I want it for. Which Tempo, please, the old one in Girne or the new in Catalkoy? Unfortiunately I am not able to get to the South these days.

Rose, I have bought it in Tempo in Karaoglanoglu, but I suppose that they would have it in the big Catalkoy one too, IF they have it at all. I am going to UK in a few weeks, if I end up with some spare luggage allowance, I will bring some back for you if you will share your recipe with me!

Rıght are you sıttıng comfortably ? then Ill switch back to English! and begin. And give you the results of my seaches in Google and Google translate.

Pearl Barley is Frenk Arpa, which means European Barley. Pearl Barley is ordinary barley with the husk removed, and then literally polished. A very helpful lady at Catalköy Lemar came up with Arpa şehriye which is Barley Noodles, and it seems that will do for my purposes the husks actually also being beneficial, but if not Ill take you up on your offer, Hippo.

I rather hoped no one would ask why! But in my family it is reputed to be good for cystitis and other personal female problems! Having looked it up on Google it appears it is one of those miracle foods which is good for everything particular the internal digestive system, plus lowering chlorestoral even better than oats and levelling blood sugar levels for diabetics and also helps arthritis and is a preventative for bowel cancer! As for recipes, see below for an easy drink, but I just add a handful to soups and stews. Google gives lots of recipes.

Easy summer lemonade.

Scald a handful of barley and soak for an hour or two.

Slice in a lemon or two (incl. skins)

Sweeten with sugar to taste, or better still honey.

Scald the lot with boiling water



Chill and serve with ice cubes and mint leaves and/ or slices of cucumber and/or lemon
