Has anyone had a speeding fine cancelled?
Hi there,
Just asking for advice. My mother had a speeding fine of 195 tl today after she was stopped by the police for supposedly speeding. They stopped us on the Girne bypass between Ezic restaurant and GAU. They claimed she had been travelling at 99.7km/hr on a 75km road. This was wrong. The car was doing no more than 65km particularly as the car was packed to capacity with three adults and two babies in the back along with baby equipment (additional car seats, travel cot etc) we had just bought. We had just exited a side road (Cennet Sokak) and were getting ready to go round the roundabout further on. My mother never goes anywhere near a speed limit even more so when driving babies.
We believe that the hand held machine they used was not calibrated properly and they needed to top up their coffers. Her paperwork was in order. We argued with the policeman and spoke to his senior who told us to go to Girne Police Station on Monday and talk to the officer there and it will be cancelled. We find the idea that they will cancel it hard to believe especially as it is a nice little money earner as they were pulling over many cars while we were there. Has anyone been in a similar experience and had their ticket cancelled? Thanks

You've got two hopes. They told me not to pay my fine and that was OK as everyone else never did. I paid as I am a frequent visitor. The office for the traffic fines is very interesting as there are thousands of unpaid tickets in a large number of folders. Recommend pay as I did. I was singled out and the two cypriots either side of me were told to move on whilst I got a speeding ticket

its strange why people always say i could not have been speeding i was only doing ** and not ** !!!
i personally would find it hard to know the exact speed i was doing just before slamming all on when you see them waving you down or is that just me ?

I find the new road surface very deceiving for a guide to speed being smooth and quiet. This linked to the way they are using speed traps as an easy earner makes driving that road not enjoyable and I often prefer driving slowly through Karoglanouglou than risking the vagaries of authorities. The three main spots that I see THEM I now try to control speed before getting there plus take notice of the kind folk coming the other way.
It is a shame that the authorities take this easy route in their efforts to reduce speed related accidents. We know the answer as to why not but why don't they tackle the serial offenders, the young people in high performance cars who are eventually photographed dead in the wrecked vehicles. Also the red light jumpers, I have seen first hand the police ignoring incidents of this.
Not an answer to the initial question but there are certainly doubts surrounding the whole system of controlling motoring offenders.

Not cancelled, but halved by turning on the tears (which they can't seem to handle) !!!
She was a London Cypriot and spoke fluently though.
Good luck.

Re: Has anyone had a speeding fine cancelled?
I've had one speeding fine cancelled and one reduced. I know that makes me sound dreadful but they are 5 years apart. The first one I refused to pay because by the time I find out it was nearly 2 years out of date and the Inspector just cancelled it on the computer on his desk (I was doing 12K over the limit on the way to airport) The second offence occured in October 2011 and I tried to pay the fine of 141tl 4 times during 2012. ( I was doing 10K over the limit at nght with no other car or building in sight. ( Each time I was told "go away we don't have the paper work" ) This week I went to pay again - "yes you owe the money but the paper work is stuck in Lapta". I refused to go to Lapta and told the Inspector, I either pay today or I won't pay the fine and you can take it off the computer again. After a bit of discussion we decided on a compromise i.e. i would pay the fine as long as it was reduced and I didn't have to go back to Lapta. So that was the end of the story.
One more thing, apparently some private company or other was supposed to have hand delivered the second fine personally but couldn't find the road. That's the police story and they're sticking to it!!! I have to say my experiences with the TRNC police have always been amicable and at times downright funny.

Did your mother sign the paper?
From what I've heard if you want to contest a radar ticket then you have to go to court. Unfortunately what happens there no-one knows as you have to wait years to actually get a court date. It has something to do with whether the radar has been calibrated or not.
Unfortunately if your mum signed the paper theres not a lot you can do.
