Ive lived here a long time and like many have given up mostly of hope about the status quo of trnc changing having seen years of talks etc come to nothing .

Perhaps there is some leverage here and a requirement to solve the gas situation etc .
Maybe the recent letter from the Greeks is no coincidence and things are afoot . Not to mention the Tcs preference to adopt the euro. I'm not getting to excited as there has been so many false dawn's here . Just a glimmer of hope .

Does seem a coincidence that the Greeks should be playing their olive branch card albeit on their terms...

Heres the daily express article it's actually interesting as it makes the point that Greece and cyprus has being using their veto in Europe in other situations to make mystic ...
It's probably all political posturing as turkey bring the Injustice of the tcs to the world's attention the Greeks want to be shown in the best possible light by offering an olive branch hence the letter their "apparent " willingness to negotiate that is until it comes to a vote and they say no ..like the anan plan....

Give Ercan to the UN to manage? Just remind me how many years the UN has been here, trying to manage and arrange a peace settlement between the two sides? Now tell me that it will be a good idea to give up Ercan and ask yourself what is hidden in the UN management - maybe the flights will be cheaper but first you will have to be allowed to fly and as a non-Cypriot that may even prove to be difficult.
It seems to me that the whole thing hangs on Turkey recognising the RoC and I can't see that happening soon no matter what the TC population want.

No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

I cannot for the life of me think why the TC's would want to revert to the Euro, the cost of living would go up in leaps and bounds. Why do so many GC's come over here to shop, because its cheaper.

Try getting your salary in tl.....while everything else is indexed to foreign currency I think it's more the expats who are horrified at the prospect ...there are lots of swings and roundabouts comparing to north and south prices...all the tcs I know would prefer euro salary ..rents already in £ . Petrol and many goods indexed to foreign currency . The only reason restaurants ate cheaper here is because the workers are paid a never ending depreciating pittance . Knowing a lot of hotel workers their favourite customers are Europeans particularly germans as they leave euro tips ..if prices go.up because of the adoption of the euro then someone somewhere will be making the excess which of course will be the tcs...ive just asked 3 of my friends who are all tcs working a nurse a hotel worker and an engineer ...they all said yes please euro salary ...

If their rents are in £ then surely the £ is the currency for them... what's the betting the 500 person sample were given only one choice TRL or EUR?Reyntj wrote: ↑Wed 01 Jun 2022 5:23 pmTry getting your salary in tl.....while everything else is indexed to foreign currency I think it's more the expats who are horrified at the prospect ...there are lots of swings and roundabouts comparing to north and south prices...all the tcs I know would prefer euro salary ..rents already in £ .
What's the betting that if the 500 person sample were given a choice of relatively stable currencies they choose anything but TRL... not necessarily EUR.

I think $ many Turkish people save $ my wife's father only kept $. But euro is the obvious choice because we are in Cyprus . It's probably an academic point anyway I'm making as the chance of anything changing is slim.
