Renewing a UK passport advise?

Has anyone renewed their UK passport recently please? I need to renew mine in the next couple of months. We plan to go for a break to the UK in March when I could collect it. My question is, what is the process, do you complete the application on line then make an appointment to go to a passport office? Obviously I need it here to go to the UK and then only have 10 days to get the new one. Am I right in thinking you cannot get a new one until you send your old one off?

Any advise would be appreciated.

There are a couple of options here allowing you to renew whilst you are in the UK
https://www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently

I did the 1 day one a few years ago at Newport, just meant hanging around there for 4 hours after the initial appointment, which you can book up to 3 weeks in advance.

come on aylin, thank you for pointing me in the right direction. Went to the Liverpool passport office, couldn't have been easier, the staff were lovely very helpful. Had a nice stroll around Liverpool, got back early, no problem, nice shiny passport ready.
