I looked on google for "alternatives to skype" in came up with at least 10 alternatives.

Nothing seems to be as cheap as Skype unfortunately, especially when you need to have a UK telephone number. you can call free to other people who have the app, and quite cheaply to UK landlines or mobile numbers.
Not sure whether you can have a UK number for people to call or not - I didn't look that far
