What is the difference between the new 5 year residency and the 5 year exemption, what are the pros and cons
Do you apply for the 5 year residency on line the same as the 1 year residency
Do we know if the exemption will continue to be issued or will everyone eventually have to get 5 years residency
Any christal ball's out there

Re: Exemption v Residency
Dave,
It is down to individual choice I guess.
Exemption, appears to give just that from the 'residency process', but wouldn't accrue towards anything permanent (as far as I understand it), for example permanent residency and ultimately citizenship if you are so inclined.
Also the exemption appears to give the 'right to reside'; compared to actual residency permits I understand not equal rights - not that temporary residency gives many rights anyway! Ultimately, if you become persona non grata (as in any other country as a non-citizen), you're out regardless of what piece of paper you have.
With the new changes in residency, as I understand it property owners in the residency category do not need to show proof of income; if this is the same for the property owners in the exemption category, and you have no plans to stay here permanently, and for swallows, the exemption seems they way to go IMHO.
In any event, if not a contributor to the TRNC social insurance, or a retiree of the same system, best to have health cover (make sure the cover the tRNC, not all do); even the health care cover with the residency is basic, state hospital care.
One more caveat: some contributors have said the residency IT system is not yet set up to issue a 5 year residency for property owners, or others, despite the change in the law! The 5 year exemption appears process not to be available online, unlike the residency process.
Regarding continuation of anything here, no one can foresee any changes in the law/processes as subject to change, e.g. new government, new minister.....
