sunday evening , decided we would go to farmagusta and have a Chinese and it was without doubt the worst Chinese meal we have ever had and I was quite vocal in letting them know , so if you are ever considering going , think twice .

Of course there are other things to see and do in Mağusa ... besides dining in a Chinese restaurant.chelwood wrote:sunday evening , decided we would go to farmagusta and have a Chinese and it was without doubt the worst Chinese meal we have ever had and I was quite vocal in letting them know , so if you are ever considering going , think twice
By the way, now that I have eaten "Chinese" for a whole year ... at a boarding school in the far north-east of the country ... I have to say that the sort of dishes we eat in *our* (western) Chinese Restaurants would seem to be westernised versions of what's eaten there ... ie. meals tailored to suit our perferences ... normally ... bearing in mind Chelwood's unpleasant experience yesterday.
I have not been to Hong Kong and the Cantonese-speaking region of China close to there ... and it from in and around Hong Kong that most of the Chinese in *our* restaurants come from ... so it's my guess that the dishes there are more similar to those found in our restaurants.
I suppose I should give an example of how different the cuisines were - in my school we were often given large pieces of pork or mutton attached to the bone or, in the case of pork, with the skin and fat around it ... and I'm one of those fussy eaters who gets a guilty conscience about eating meat when he knows he's eating the flesh of animals. In any case, the meals there in Harbin bore very little resemblence to the often-diced-stir-fry variety I'd eaten in Chinese restaurants before going to China.
The people there in the north-east were wonderful though.

Re: worst chinese meal ever
Ian, sort of reminds me of my last trip to China (albeit 10 years ago) We stopped for a meal at a local restaurant when coming back from seeing the Terracotta Army (accompanied by our Chinese Guide (AKA Guard) The meal was duly presented and we dug in. After two mouthfulls I said to the others "I'm sure these are cubes of Spam" I asked the Guide/Guard and was told " it is am old Chinese delicasy" At the end of the meal I suggested to our table that we congratulate the chef and ask him to let us have the rececipe. A few minutes later, he walked out in his chefs white, duly carrying some opened tins of Spam) We did manage to keep straight faces, but it was terribly difficult!!
