Wood worm ????
Just discovered a section of wood on an internal door frame eaten away with little worm like creatures imbedded in the wood. Have sprayed them, can anyone tell me what they are and how to treat properly?

Re: Wood worm ????
Hi - sounds like it could be termites to me - I had my property treated last year - at first I only noticed a few muddy looking marks round a couple of door frames - I used a local joiner and he was very helpful. I really did think that the house would fall down but it was easily rectified. I, (when I am out there live in Alsancak)
My advice would be to get someone who really has the skills to deal with it and have it treated.
Good luck

Hi Holly, I am no expert but sounds like woodwoom. You should be able to buy woodworm treatment from a hardware store, or what I have done in the past and seems to work is strip down the paint around the infected area and brush on some White Spirit on the wood, constantly applyng it in that area, it will penetrate and hopefully kill the woodworm, but if you can get the real woodworm treatment it would be better.
I am sure someone on the forum would be able to give you professional advice.

Thanks for the advice Newbie and Soner, think I am going to have to replace the wood as you could punch a hole in it with your finger.

We discovered the same thing when decorating last month. Our architraves were MDF and strangely enough the carpenter said that the woodworms love MDF more than wood! We replaced the affected architraves with wood ones. Fingers crossed................................

Opposite Starling in Alsancak, there is a pest control shop.
They are very helpful, and I'm sure will know who to call out to help you.
Don't leave it too long.

Re: Wood worm ????
Sorry for late response to this interesting post but have not been long on this forum. We had this problem and it seems to mainly apply to the frames which are countersunk through the floor coverings into what is usually sand underneath and where, like ants, the nuisance has easy access. We concreted in the recesses and the new frames sit firmly on the flooring and look better than was, when new. A local carpenter also advised us that they are attracted to the oil in the paint when some cheaper local paints are used. We now use more expensive water based paints which have a superior finish and do not leave brushstroke marks. Only time will tell how much of a remedy this is but we took the view that it was more likely to be better than that before for very little extra cost.
