When you have gone over the mountain towards Famagusta, from Esentepe, there is a petrol station on your left, you go over that roundabout and on to the new road
until it meets the Famagusta/Nicosia road, continue towards Famagusta until you get to the 1st roundabout - take 3rd exit signposted Larnaca.
Keep going straight on, past China Bazaar on right, straight on until you get to the roundabout where you can go to the border crossing.
Go straight over that and continue straight on all the way (road bends in places but basically you are following it straight on all the way).
Eventually (what might seem an age!) you will see a mosque with 2 spires!!! bear right at the end there and then it's (I think) 2nd right and 1st left.
Don't worry if it doesn't look right coz it's an old run down virtually derelict building and yes, you will be in the right place - the doors are always open
and you will probably see the material falling out on the floor. The place is packed with rolls & rolls of fabric of all kinds. find what you want and the boss (who speaks very good English)
will sort every thing out for you.
Good Luck. Virtually you just go straight on all the way to it from that 1st roundabout turning.

There are fabric shops just off Ledra Street (in little streets leading up towards the mosque) in the old part of Lefkosa.

mimi78, why would you cross to the dark side when along Arasta there are several shops selling material. Also with lira at low rate then other side has become very costly.
The warehouse mentioned above in Gazi Magusa is very good. Only problem is it is stuffed full!! I have spoken to people about this place who cross over from dark side to buy their material there as it is cheaper.

Mermaid Fabrics in Karakum.
Drive away from Kyrenia, towards Catalkoy.
It's on your right hand side, opposite the K-Pet petrol station.

The fabric shops at Ledra are on both sides! When you walk over turn left then right the road running parallel to Ledra Street has loads of fabric shops. Do not know about prices for either though as have never used them tend to go to Mermaid.

Re: Where to buy cheap material on the roll
Sorry, the confusion is that it is not called Ledra Street on the north side. The street is called Arasta where the fabric shops are and all the clothes shops. On left hand side of Arasta there is a shop with a sewing machine just in door way and they will not only sell fabric but make things very cheaply. I stand to be corrected but this shop is associated with the warehouse in Gazi Magusa.
It is worth a visit to the shops in Lefkosa anyway, make a day of it and do some exploring around the old city and have lunch.

chiangbill, wonderful directions and we will take the trip if only for the trip! Only one question, I drive that route whenever I go to fetch my daughter from Larnaca airport so I know the "new road" well and when it gets to the Famagusta/Nicosia road there is a roundabout which I would normally go straight across at - do I turn left onto the Famagusta road there please??
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

These instructions were given to us by friends, and we found the fabric shop OK. But got a bit lost on the way back though.waddo wrote:chiangbill, wonderful directions and we will take the trip if only for the trip! I must just reply to the comment made by Cyprusishome.
regarding my need to cross to Ledra Street , the dark side.
I think it is the devil in me that makes me do it.
